Catalog 1961: Ocsilloscopy

"John Whitney’s demo reel of work created with his analog computer/film camera magic machine he built from a WWII anti-aircraft gun sight. Also Whitney and the techniques he developed with this machine were what inspired Douglas Trumbull (special fx wizard) to use the slit scan technique on 2001: A Space Odyssey."

This reminds me a lot of the 70’s network identification animations. Anyone know of a modern software emulator for this sort of effect?

Some good stuff from Erlend Øye’s other project.I never get tired of hearing him over this sort of stripped down dance-rock.

Over The Hills And Far Away

led_zeppelin_houses_of_the_holy_a Led Zeppelin - Houses Of The Holy - Back
Thanks to my parents and their friends I grew up on bands like Led Zeppelin, The Doors, The Rolling Stones, et al. and if asked my favorite band of all time now I think I would still have to say Led Zeppelin (after a long internal debate between them and the latter-day Beatles). Of all Zeppelin’s albums I always enjoyed 1973’s Houses of the Holy most. I really love all of their album covers; the imagery they employed is so organic and transcendent. I have an original copy of Led Zeppelin III with the 2 piece cover and rotating artwork, I’ll post that one soon.

There’s a great discussion of the origin of the Houses of the Holy cover art on wikipedia.

Tycho in Urb’s Next 100

urb-tycho-page
Urb Magazine’s 14th annual "Next 100" issue is on shelves now and this year they were kind enough to include me in the list.

"The only thing more beautiful than the mesmerizing design and print work he creates under the ISO50 name might be Scott Hansen’s rich analog signal path. As Tycho, this San Francisco artist has an absolute lock on daydream downtempo, fusing thick, fuzzy beats with lush synths, samples and guitars. Buy the ticket, take the ride. RT – Urb Magazine"

Kind words indeed, much appreciated.

ISO50 Speaking @ FITC Toronto

Untitled-1
I’ll be speaking at the FITC Toronto Design & Technology Festival on Monday, April 21st, 2008 [view full schedule]. I’ve yet to attend an FITC event but I’ve heard great things so I’m very excited to check it out. I’ll be covering the method and theory behind my work in a talk entitled "ISO50: Blending Analogue & Digital". Hope to see you all out.

I’ll also be doing a live Tycho set with ISO50 visuals at the Drake Hotel in Toronto on April 20th. I’ll be posting more on that as details become available. There’s talk of a set during the FITC festival as well, more info will follow.

Worry Wort

Worry Wort from Radiohead’s Knives Out ep. One of those amazing songs that somehow slipped through the cracks. Great synth work on here. That cover on the other hand….not so good.
