Vintage 70’s Racing Decals

Driving through Georgia right now (Tycho show tonight w/ Little Dragon at Masquerade, Atlanta) and came across these vintage racing logos on Sarcoptiform’s flickr. Makes me wonder what it must have been like to sit back with a Coors wearing a Deliverance-era-Burt-Reynolds-neoprene-vest / life-preserver at a drag strip in the 1970’s south. I feel like somehow Aaron Draplin has lived out that exact same scenario via some sort of swap-meet wormhole time warp. I also have to believe he has all of these decals somewhere in his vast collection of great American ephemera.

Thomas Prior

Looking at Thomas Prior’s work is like some kind of visual catharsis for me. The energy and emotion he captures in his photographs is simply captivating. See more here.

Moog just released their Animoog synthesizer app for the iPad and it looks impressive. Get it now for 99 cents before it jumps to the regular price of $29.99. Anybody have a chance to try it out and care to share their experience in the comments?

ISO50 On The Road

If you didn’t already know, we’re on the road for the Tycho / Little Dragon tour this month. Jakub is along for the ride as tour manager so posts are going to be a little slow for the next week or so. I’ll do my best to post a couple updates when I get the chance. You can follow along on Instagram (@ISO50) or Twitter (@ISO50) for more frequent updates.

Side note: this is my first time posting to the blog from a phone. Tried using the official WordPress app this morning only to have two complete drafts deleted for no apparent reason. Got the Blogpress app now so we’ll see if this one makes it.

Driving from Boston to Philadelphia now for tonight’s show with Little Dragon and Questlove at Union Transfer. should be a good night, hope to see some of you out. Jakub and I will be lurking around the merch booth (where you can score the Tycho Dive CD early along with the new Tycho shirts) so come by and say hello.

For all those on the west coast, we just added a couple dates: Dec 8th @ The Echoplex, LA and Dec 10th @ The Independent in SF. Check the events page for details.

P.S. I took that picture above with Instagram in Connecticut, so beautiful here in the fall.

Tom Eckersley

Tom Eckersley (1914-1997) was an English poster artist known for his use of bold, bright colors and simple block shapes. During WWII he was a cartographer for the Royal Air Force and created designs for the General Post Office. In 1947, Art and Industry magazine described his approach to design as scrapping the “non-essential, by the perfect mating of chosen word with chosen picture, he wings the total message.” A year later he was awarded the Order of the British Empire for his services to poster design.

The Visual Arts Data Service has a great collection of his work.

Mike Bayne

Mike Bayne creates striking realist paintings that celebrate the mundane. Can’t help but be reminded of William Eggelston’s work, which while photographic, maintains a sort of painterly style.

Full Album Stream: Real Estate – Days

Coming late in the year but better late than never is the highly anticipated(definitely in my opinion) new album from Real Estate on Domino Recordings. Lead by Matt Mondanile aka Ducktails and his close friends, this record would have been the perfect summer album but it will fill that void of when I can’t listen to any more drone during the winter and need vocals that aren’t annoying. On Days they cut out most of the lo-fi feel, its more classic rock in the sense that you’d hear in a garage of your father’s friends house and you’d be like “this man has good taste“, its not all weak folk/rock like Decemberist or Death Cab and also doesn’t get all psychedelic(never a bad thing) like a Tame Impala album, just the perfect tone. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED, pre-order the album here
