Over twenty years in the making and set for a 2018 launch, the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) is the single most advanced space telescope ever constructed. Successor to NASA’s beloved Hubble Space Telescope, JWST has been purpose-built for studying the infrared portion of the electromagnetic spectrum to give astronomers an ability of seeing past clouds of dust and gas and further back to the beginning of the Universe than we ever have. How far? According to NASA the JWST will see the Universe’s very first star formations taking place only 100 to 250 million years after the Big Bang. Such distant and precise observations promise to unleash a torrent of new discoveries and unlock fundamental quandaries about the origin of the cosmos and life in the Universe.

A few interesting facts:

• JWST’s primary mirror is a 6.5 meter diameter gold coated beryllium reflector that is too large for contemporary launch vehicles, so the mirror is being composed of 18 hexagonal segments (as seen above), which will all unfold after the telescope is launched. Why Hexagons? It’s beyond my comprehension, but supposedly this has something to do with hexagons having a perimeter less than that of a square over a given area, which translates to a gained efficiency for steering the mirror segments and focusing the telescope.

• The telescope will maintain an L2 orbit, meaning that it will orbit in earth’s shadow and around the sun, not the earth. The idea here is to eliminate all possible heat / light sources, such as Earth’s heat-shimmer, and keep the telescope as cold as possible. How cold? Extremely. Cold. The JWST’s mid-infrared instrument (MIRI) will operate at a set temperature of 7 Kelvins, or -266° C / -447° F, through the use of a helium refrigerator, or cryocooler system (source).

• Although JWST’s primary goal is to study the first galaxies or stars that formed after the Big Bang, the telescope is also capable of measuring the physical and chemical properties of planetary systems within our Milky Way and will investigate the potential for life in those planetary systems.

• When launched, some scientists suggest the telescope will represent a greater technological achievement than landing on the moon.

Just a few photos of the very awesome Renault Sport livery used prominently from the late 70’s throughout the mid 80’s. Renault Sport works teams have alternated between a few color schemes over the past 40 years, but the classic black/yellow with isometric accents towards the aft has always been my favorite. While Renault officially exited F1 with the debut of Team Lotus, it was nice seeing the vintage livery on the grid for a few seasons. With so many heinous paint jobs these days, it was a bummer to see it go. Be sure to check out the YouTube clip for some very casual conversations in French at 200+ mph. More after the jump. (more…)

Lovely colors & photographic sense for capturing small, fleeting moments from this rather unknown Flickr user known as “iamthechanster.” I can’t seem to find her first name anywhere, and she seems to only shoot as a hobby, but i’d certainly hang one of these on a wall. I love how the more haunting sounds are becoming more and more popular during the summer months, here’s a few new ones that I love. I know most of you are still just feeling out Playlist 16.

Architect and illustrator André Chiote took the time and illustrated out a nice size collection of Museums around the world, my favorite part honestly is his selection of color.

Pleasantly surprised by the striking good looks of the newly revealed Xbox console. Wired has a piece detailing the new unit and the design process that formed it.

I’ve read a lot of people bashing the design after the reveal. I’m not sure what they’re comparing it to, this or this or even this, but in my book it’s the best looking console thus far. Of course it’s all relative considering the gaming industry consistently produces some of the worst product design imaginable given their budgets and resources. I’ve seen a lot of people online comparing it to an 80’s VCR. I love 80’s VCRs, I love stackable media components, and I’ve always loved Xbox, so I suppose I’m somewhat biased.

Dub like this track from Orphan is rare, its not as murky or linear, I find it really entrancing because it has old IDM melodic structure, I end up playing it over and over.

I wish you could see my face when this Dirty Beaches song comes on, i’m shaking it in disgust, it changes you, the drive the musk the maturity and rawness just tosses your cares aside. You don’t enjoy a song like this, it sets a mood that for the record has more balls than any Johnny Cash song.

The Revenge’s production is been slightly evolving away from disco, the edits almost seem like a trend from the past, I love both so either way i’m happy.

“World” music has a huge atmosphere that still hasn’t been explored, there is fusion and mismatches that will most likely not be made in my lifetime, well atleast Egyptian Sports Network is taking a proper stab at it.
