I’ve just started a film oriented design project in one of my classes, and I’ve been spending a lot of time browsing through the archives over at Art of the Title. Started in December 2007, Art of the Title is a blog dedicated to the film title sequence, and is a great resource for film buffs and designer alike. They post high quality videos of each sequence they chronicle, and usually have an interview with the creators as well. It’s amazing to see what can be done with little to no footage from the actual movie.
My favorites are Catch Me If You Can, Kung Fu Panda, and Stranger Than Fiction.
My favorites:

tnx for this great post, gotta inspired! 😉
came across that site while searching for the title sequence of ‘the conversation’ a few months a go, very good site
nice post, alex! digging the hellenic wide in “catch me if you can”….
gotta get that font!!!
I’ve always really liked the catch me if you can title credits and the stranger than fiction graphics as well…so clean!
Scott, check out the title sequence for The Fall. It’s incredible.

I’d also recommend the sequence from the movie PERSEPOLIS.
Stranger Than Fiction is my all time favorite movie and I love the title sequences. Persepolis is pretty amazing as is Kite Runner. Alex, I would definitely check out Kite Runner’s title sequence, it’s great.
Does anyone know the name of the typeface used on the opening title sequence for “To Kill A Mockingbird?”

I love the Catch Me If You Can intro. I took a great deal of inspiration from this style whilst I undertook my first animation project.
Nina Simone’s Very Best of Album shares this style and the advert to promote this (at least in the UK) had a very similar style. Worth checking out.
Keep us up to date with your project!
I’ve just found the Nina Simone advert. I haven’t looked into it, but, I take an educated guess that Kuntzel+Deygas did the advert.

Woow what awesome link! thanks Alex, that is a great resource.
And so I’m another fan for the Catch me… is the best opening titles I had saw.
Cheers
these are all great too, but the opening credits for Commando are f’n great. Schwarzenegger and Alyssa Milano feeding a “wild” baby deer……priceless.
seriously tho, the opening credit sequence for Panic Room is delicious.

the opening title sequence of ‘Lucky Number Sleven’ is impressive as well.
Alex, try also the opening credits for Fahrenheit 451, I believe it’s simple yet strange, might be interesting to you…
thank you for posting this site! i love good movie title sequences and this is a great resource.
nice project, but i miss the rating system
(and the text isn`t reader-friendly)
You favorites are mine as well. I prefer the more simplistic designs to the over-the-top variety.
I’m always peeking in on Imaginary Forces, since they do lots of credit work.

I just wanted to point out that the titles for Catch Me If You Can and the Nina Simone ad are strongly reminiscent of the titles created by Saul Bass for movies like North by Northwest and Psycho.
I am a huge fan of his geometric stylization.

Funnily enough, I just watched Catch me if you can again the other night and was blown away (again) by the title sequence. I really *really* appreciate a movie to take time out to introduce the movie in such an amazing way, an art form few movies today bother with. The movie is cool, but the intro makes it all the sweeter.
