Jakub’s recent post about his mystery images inspired me to do a little sleuthing of my own. I’ve had the top image on my desktop for a long while now labeled “awesome_findit” and never had any idea where it came from. Turns out it was part of a (now a few years old) series of photographs by Asako Narahashi.
I’m a big fan of the whole half awake and half asleep in the water series — concept and execution. I have always been fascinated by the ocean, and bobbing about idly in the waves is one of my favorite things to do. Her photos simultaneously capture the tranquility of this wonderfully lazy activity, while still maintaining the dynamism of an ocean swell. I also really enjoy how heavy the water looks — reminds me of that Keane album title Under the Iron Sea.
These images are absolutely stunning! I can’t believe that I’ve never seen them. I totally agree with you about the Keane album cover.
The top one looks very like Mount Taranaki in New Zealand but then again its prob Mt. Fuji in Japan???
I like the concept; it’s as if the photos were taken by a buoy bobbing in the ocean.
If you haven’t already, you should really check these photos out:

I just saw them this morning and…WOW! I don’t mean to steal any thunder from the post, but I just **had to** share these!
Very eye catching, ominous yet soothing.
Beautiful shots. The first one is my absolute favourite.
These shots are great. very unique.
brook said it best, great post Alex
not sure if you’ve heard of it, but figured i’d give you a tip: if your trying to search where a photo might have come from, you can always give this a try: http://tineye.com/
can’t stop looking at them. there is a great sense of emotion within the photos. Thanks for sharing…
Those are really incredible. Thanks for passing them along. They look so dreamlike/scary, but then beautiful and peaceful at the same time. Right on the edge of wonder and the darkness beneath.
wow the jet liner shots were amazing as well. i love looking at the water shots…but for sure reason my mind wanders to the muppets whenever i see them…i have no idea why.
I’m always moved by water and art produced with it! My favorite by far is the aircraft being taken by the sea! I think Asako Narahashi would love my new series of Underwater Nude Rock Quarry shots in a series entitled “OmniPhantmic”! Thanks to mother earth for the water we can still swim in!
