Salt is an ongoing new project from David Burdeny, a Canadian photographer hailing from Winnipeg, Manitoba. Reminds me a lot of Edward Burtynsky’s Australian Mine project (link). Aerial photography exploring human environmental impacts is disturbing, yet never ceases to awe and amaze me.

More of Burdney’s work can be seen on his website, as well as in person at various gallies around the world (see ‘representatives’ page).

Spectacular Rice Terraces of Yuanyang

14452366851445236690

Rural China must be an absolutely amazing place to visit and photograph. A sentiment Thierry Bornier must have said to himself before leaving his job as a Chief Financial Officer at an international fashion company in New York and traveling to China to start a new life.

Thierry states..

…deep down I knew that number crunching could never satisfy my thirst for natural beauty and my love for photography.

And so, I gathered my courage and decided to see what my life would become if I did something I truly loved. I’ve never looked back.

Theirry, a French photographer specializing in capturing the landscapes of China, has been documenting the cascades of rice terraces in Yuanyang every year since permanently moving to China.

The winter temperatures here, although never freezing, are such that the terraces can only support one rice crop a year. After the harvest, from mid-September until mid-November depending on the elevation, the terraces are filled with water until April, when the planting begins.

From elevations as high as 6,500 feet, the terraces undulate down into the valleys, forming intricate patterns that mirror the clouds and the sky. The fusion of man and nature creates awe-inspiring beauty, and I love the patterns and the diversity of colours that can be found at each site.

You can see more of Theirry’s work on his website: thierrybornier.net where he offers week long photography workshops in rural China beginning in February of next year.

Liit Fighter presents Hadouken

tumblr_nwzrqqID6h1qc5p7xo1_1280

LACK records has recently become one of my favourite labels. Not just because they have a stellar back-catalogue, consisting of some great releases by Pablo Mateo and D-IX, among some other gems. But also because they have a really strong mix selection from friends of the label. Every time I listen to these mixes I discover a wealth of new music that gets me super hyped about life.

Their latest release is by Liit, with his EP titled Liit Fighter presents Hadouken. Prepare your ears for some really uplifting and addictive techno. Highly recommended!

Bewilderbeast goes (En)tropical

1014254_482882695122297_1231032392_n

Bewilderbeast is a producer that has continually blown me away with every single one of his releases since I first heard his track ‘Water Below’ several years ago (that’s a timeless jam, for sure). The South London producer has really honed in on a distinct sound, that blends and experiments with elements of lo-fi house, funk, and chillwave. His brilliant 2013 album, ‘Unreal_Estate‘ was, however, not the only music we would be hearing from that period in his life, as we have now been graced with “a selection of experiments made at the same time as Unreal_Estate” in the form of (En)tropical EP. It’s everything one could expect from him, and more. Grab it for ‘name your own price’ over at his Bandcamp.

Bahamian Moor hosts an excellent show over on London’s NTS Radio. Here’s a stone-cold gem from his most recent set hidden on this Surveillance LP (1980).

Vox Portent has steadily been making grounds in the South African music scene for several years now. Based in Johannesburg, he is inspired by all that surrounds him and delves into almost all creative pools for inspiration, both consciously and unconsciously. While talking to him, you immediately get a sense of the vast depths of his passion for music. It’s like he loses himself just talking or thinking about it. His latest three offerings have been part of an audio-visual project, whereby he releases a new track and artwork each week with the intention of broadening his sonic horizons. The tracks so far have been curious explorations of sound, all of which brim with hope and tranquility. It would be well worth your while to check out his back-catalogue if you like what you hear, as well as follow him for whatever else he might deliver. His music is always filled with exciting developments and eccentricities, and he is never afraid to try something new.

Acid Mondays remix Lakker’s ‘Milch’

lakker-tundra

Lakker are an Irish duo who make what they call ‘weirdno.’ It’s hard to put a finger on the multifarious sounds they combine into their music, but their latest album, Tundra, released late May via R & S Records, is a masterpiece of sophistication and complexity. ‘Milch’ is a brilliantly dark beat-driven bass and choral cut from the album, and has been accompanied by two remixes by Acid Mondays and Lahun. If you’re looking to hype up for your Friday night, the Acid Mondays mix might just do the trick. There’s a reason why Lakker have been receiving a lot of attention recently.

Portable Sunsets

Bless is the second album by Brooklyn-based producer, Portable Sunsets, released a little while ago via the brilliant Amsterdam based record label, Atomnation. While it took me a little while to actually sit down and listen to it properly, it’s safe to say that it has quickly become one of my favourite albums of the year. ‘Ledges’ and ‘Straylight’ are two of the most beautiful cuts from the album, inhabiting a fine space between soft aerated ambient music and languid danceability. The whole album is highly recommended.

RUDOLF C AND SILENTSPOOK

tumblr_mormlca93z1sw3lrto1_1280

During a recent Soundcloud dig, I came across the brilliantly crunchy and grimy house music of Melbourne’s Rudolf C and Silentspook. Both tracks have an incredibly strong focus and flow and would be perfect the dancefloor.
Despite there being an array of demos and snippets scattered across their respective Soundclouds, there is definite potential in all they do, so definitely worth keeping an eye on.

Body-San: Hotspot (She My Wifi)

11122491_10100601599272855_1335359365_n

Seldom do you come by an album so seamlessly crafted around a certain aesthetic. However, 100% Silk’s latest signing, Brandon Knocke, a.k.a. Body-san has mastered just this in his forthcoming debut cassette, Corporate Interiors. The latest track, premiered here today, ‘Hotspot (She My Wifi)’ entices you with its hypnotically groovy pulse, extending the listening experience into an audio-visual one, whereby it transfers you into a world so perfectly captured in the image above. The vibes are mellow, but it’s incredibly hard not to be taken in by its infectious danceability. Corporate Interiors is definitely an album to look forward to. To get you even more excited, you should check out his equally brilliant track (and video) ‘KC VAPES’, which draws you even further into the strong visual dimension of his music.
