Washed Out+Lusine+Christine+Hot Chip

Washed Out - Life Of Leisure EP
I heard Washed Out on the Gorilla vs Bear blog awhile back and have been hunting down tracks ever since. He has the same draw that Panda Bear, Lone, and Bullion had to my ear when I first hear them. I think this song is soo good and different that it might be a new way to figure out if I can be friends with a person solely based on just playing them this song and their reaction, I kid I kid i’d never set up that kind of system to find new friends, who does such a thing.

Lusine and Cassette’s Wont Listen’s remix of Christine both came out today, i’ve been waiting for this Lusine song to come out so I could share it with you all. Cirrus builds like a growing smokey fire, very thick and quickly spreads out over the spectrum of sound while Cool Your Shoes reminds of alumni Ghostly electronic indie rockers Midwest Product with its fast pace synths and movie soundtrack breakdowns.

Michna and I have been djing weekly at Brooklyn Bowl in New York which is a beautiful venue, most of the music I play is stuff that is popular in the mainstream world but once in a while Michna or I get to throw in something we really love, last week I heard Michna play this Hot Chip remix of Gorillaz which sounded soo good on their system, the song picks up nicely and switches thru all different kinds of genres.

Ducktails+B. Fossils+H. Shores+R. Estate

Ducktails - Landscapes 12"
Lo-fi rock is coming strong recently, how long will it hold its place as the spotlight in the young hearts of vinyl loving rockers? well with acts like these i’m hoping forever. My true and very fresh caring for music like this is definitely Ducktails, met him twice this weekend and he was such a nice guy he reminded me of people in the U.P. in Michigan like the U.S. backwoods version of UK’s Bibio but maybe spends alil more time in the garage playing with pedals. I didn’t get to see him perform as Ducktails but he does a good amount of the music in Real Estate who I saw perform at Insound’s 10 yr. anniversary at Brooklyn Bowl with The Drums. Landrunner is very loopy just the way I like it, so honest and uncorrupted by much that is going on right now in indie rock.

Beach Fossils Daydream gets me thinking about how much simpler live could be, the gentle hooky guitar work meets guys that seem to have have it easy. I picture it being made by guys that don’t have many problems and their youth summers we’re or still are filled with trips to cabins, a ton a waterskiing or tubing, and just relaxing in the tall grass by some sand dunes. It’s a nice visual to have when you live on a cement island, makes me want to plan vacations better.

Tallahassee’s Holiday Shores comes to me by Brooklyn’s Twosyllable Records, the label that also put out New Villager’s 7 inch vinyl earlier this year that I love. Holiday Shores has a bit more pep in its step compared to the other songs but still in same vein, alot of catchy vocals and the drumming in a few of their songs accompanied by keys has some real unique parts that make me keep coming back and listening.

Tom Croose our semi resident DJ here on the ISO50 blog turned me onto Real Estate, he told me he loved the “guitar noodling” and the lyrics “Budweiser Sprite, Do you feel alright?”, to me its laid back feel makes me want to bust out the Yo La Tengo’s Summer Sun LP but i’m too busy chillin’ in my kids pool filled with hose water that is being warmed by the sun and I have grass blades stuck all over me that i’m trying to pick off, so lets just keep the Real Estate CD in.

Detroit Ex.+Siriusmo+In Flagranti+Loefah

Partial cover of Detroit Experiment
If I could ask for more of something right now in the music industry it would be another song like Think Twice by The Detroit Experiment, i’m not talking about another Carl Craig group to come out which is already happening and its called TRIBE or a Mark E edit of this song which is great by the way but just another band that can sound as good as this song does.

The most off the wall song that i’ve heard this summer has to be this song by Siriusmo which was played to me by someone that only listens to post rock/noise in his bedroom saying its like nothing else and described it over the phone as bangin’ like Audion, trendy like the Ed Banger stuff but with a unique angle, children vocals and some kind of cartoonish caribbean intro, very addicted in a good/weird way like pickled turnips.

Went to a bar a few weeks ago and you know right when I walked in with friends it was all girls which is never a bad thing but I realized I had no chance after awhile because it was a ladies night and pretty much no boys allowed. No biggie I just hung out and noticed the DJ was killin’ it right when this song came on, the cowbell is pretty much yelling at you to get on the dancefloor and the guitar is saying find a spot deep in the crowd and sweat it out, not bad if you love cowbells, I mean loooooooove cowbells.

Correct me if i’m wrong but is Loefah a legend in the dubstep world? I love his style of how he times his releases on the sounds and it always being very striped down, sometimes I feel like i’m left hanging but the low end makes up for that.

ISO50 Exclusive – Mogi Grumbles Mix

Artwork by Alex Cornell

Artwork by Alex Cornell

I usually post music that is easy on the ears and in my opinion will start your Monday morning off gently or some kind of pre festivities at home mix to listen to on a Friday right before you get the real deal at some venue with entertainment. Well its Wednesday and all I need is the strength to get me thru the weekday and Mogi Grumbles is all about getting us thru that by bangin’ out what he does best which is sharing his favorite disco french house songs. My favorite part about this mix is its a collection of songs that are classics that might catch anyone’s ear but a few surprises as well that come from a lot of crate digging since Mogi works at record store in Ann Arbor. Highlight track for me is Lifelike – Discomachine, reminds me of what Beamer would listen to on the way to the new Tron Legacy film screening.

Gold Panda+Simple Minds+DJ KO+The Bug

Gold Panda - Quitters Raga
Gold Panda has been a busy remixer but finally got the chance to release original material. His efforts on Quitters Raga has a very current feel which isn’t bad to have, definitely has some unique world music sampling and mash up of tons of jerky editing in the sequencing of it, i’d maybe put it on a mix tape for a friend that needs something refreshing to listen to while they travel off into a hot destination.

Benjamin Curtis of Secret Machines and School of Seven Bells highly suggested Simple Minds to me one night weeks ago, I think I grabbed the wrong album but hey I definitely rediscovered and found some hits, gonna dig deeper now.

I love playing this DJ KO song for friends because of 2 reasons: A. its the only Talib Kweli song I have and everyone seems to love him so it always goes over well B. puts a smile on everyones face that hears it or they just always somehow start rapping along knowing every word.

This might be my favorite Dubstep track of all time, when I hear it I just want to open my window at my apartment and stick my head out and invite people over to dance around inside to it but obviously after the song is over everyone would need to leave quickly but during the song i’d be very friendly to the strangers in my apartment.

p.s. Sorry Scott for posting a triangle hipster cover on the blog, it was that or a bug holding a skull and I can’t even explain how bad the Simple Minds cover is.

M. Gaye+Chick Corea+J. Brown+Four Tops

Marvin Gaye - What's Going On
Yesterday I saw Theo Parrish DJ, the man was an amazing DJ, he played everything that most people would be afraid to combine and play to a crowd but everyone loved everything he put down from Motown into Chicago Acid to Soul Funk into Hard Techno. I tried to Shazam(iPhone app that detects what song is playing) a lot that he was playing but I wasn’t getting much luck but below are a couple songs he did play and a couple that I just wanted to share to make this Monday move along a little happier.

Keep your ear out on some great parts like in the Marvin Gaye song what is that under water sonar echoed out sound? In Chick Corea’s Earth Juice, I want that guitar melody to wake me up every morning, soo good i’d let it loop for 20+ mins. The power of this Four Tops song, at 1:33 and the rest of that breakdown almost sounds like the first taste of what I think Chicago Acid is now with that muffled blown out tom sound. 9 mins of James Brown ramblin’ has never sounded so good, whenever now someone says “I don’t like electronic music is too repetitive” i’ll have to say “Oh, I get it you hate James Brown, no worries we don’t need to talk anymore, good day”

The Notwist+OOIOO+Rustie+Konrad Black

The Notwist - Neon Golden
You may know The Notwist from listening to Lali Puna or Ms. John Soda or visa versa, I guess if you break the band apart they are all pretty talented. Pilot has alway been a favorite of mine because its got this variety of style in the playing thats in the same range, i like to this of The Notwist as pretty big influence on a lot of bands albums in the mid 2000’s like Phoenix, Snow Patrol, and others that sounded like they’d fit onto an extended soundtrack for Lost in Translation.

OOIOO is a 4 piece all girl noise rock group out of Japan that release on Thrill Jockey(who is home to Tortoise, Sea and Cake, Califone, Radian, etc.) I think what attracted me to their sound is this similarity I hear to certain Slits songs and some stuff my mom listened to when I was young that was coming out in the mid 80s from Eastern Europe’s punk scene that didn’t count on just thrashing out but more distorted/experimental yet not too noisy singing style, building rhythm sections that wasn’t focused on getting you to dance but to just take over the room and the crowd, and upbeat feel at times.

If you heard this Flying Lotus & Kode9 live set that we posted awhile back then you might recognize this Rustie track as the complete crowd pleaser. Can you notice the Mike Tyson Punch Out uppercut sample? Mux Mool pointed that out, totally made the song even better for me since that was my first NES game I ever bought and played.

I’ve only met Konrad Black a couple of times, once I found out he was part of the original Circlesquare group which was great to hear since I loved the early work and the other times he was haunting dancefloors with this dark, sexier, and slower dj sets that would always make me want to pull my hair out because it was soo good. The track that has always grabbed me was this song that I had labeled “Scrawled In Blood Across Your T Shirt” but I guess that was the name of the EP, either way whatever the songs name is its off an EP called that but I have no samples to verify the track name, you’d think 240 Volts which is run by Swayzak would have some kind of info or samples or track times to help me find a copy of this song but thats fine I could never really get mad at Swayzak.

FlyLo+Mux Mool+Prince Language+The XX

Flying Lotus - 3 x 3
Flying Lotus released an EP today which included some remixes as well as 2 new ambient tracks, i’m definitely a fan of both, the man has some talent, when you see him live you’d never think this would of came out of him especially when he drops Lil’ Wayne.

Mux Mool has been on tour with Dark Party(Eliot Lipp & Leo 123) for awhile now(I think 2 or 3 months now in a Scion), he’ll probably be at the Chicago Tycho show this weekend, pinch him for me if you see him he will be the 6 foot 4 guy that should be playing but you might be able to catch him in town later the next week or in your town if you don’t live in Chicago because he has been all over the US, either way this is one of my favorites by him.

Nike has a great mix series going for people that workout unlike myself (except i’m starting up a roller hockey team, if you live in Brooklyn and play indoors let me know), one of the better ones on iTunes is the LCD Soundsystem one which is 45:33 mins long. Well DFA is doing a remix EP which includes this Prince Language remix that i’ve heard him use and kill dance floors with, hope its on vinyl.

Went to the Seaport this weekend in Manhattan to see School of Seven Bells and also caught The xx, really nice stripped down…gentle punk? is there such a thing? either way, they have a ton of buzz and definitely worth checking out.
