Choir+Radiohead+Destroyer+Manuel Tur

Choir of Young Believers
Choir of Young Believers have finally hit the States this week, the band reminds me a lot of Band of Horses but Choir might have the upper hand on the singing end. I’ve seen Jannis sing maybe 3 times when they stayed with me this winter and each time it might of been the most impressive human talent i’ve witnessed even beating out any Nathan’s hot dog eating contest. Jannis strips the songs down live to just him singing on guitar and his lady friend on cello and some pedals and they can literally do any of their songs that usually involve up to 9 people if I remember correctly.

New Radiohead came out Monday, download it here.

After listening to this 13+ minute Destroyer song I think they should change their name for 2 reasons: first one is because I want to use the name because Destroyer might be the best band name ever and the second is this song doesn’t destroy at all, its whimsical at moments almost and drones around like a Piano Magic song until we’re introduced to an almost disco kick and it becomes a whole different exotic animal.

Slow Hands told me Manuel Tur is still in his teens?? if that’s true than this kid will be owning the electronic/disco scene by the time all this mates finish college if he can hold down this diversity and sound. Can someone like Trus’me or Prince Language do a long edit of this song, i’d love to have that on vinyl.

KateBush+FeverRay+Velour100+Warpaint

Kate Bush - Aerial
I heard a lot of very good female vocalist’s this weekend that I was impressed with, PhilistineDSGN aka Danny turned me onto Velour 100 which is a band from Ypsilanti, MI(home of City Center, Wolf Eyes, etc) while I started buying up a few songs of Kate Bush on iTunes that i didn’t have on this computer, I don’t even need that Chromatic’s Running Up The Hill remix anymore.

This Fever Ray video has to be a favorite of mine now, I try to explain to musicians that a video can be done with a small budget if you have creatives on your side that aren’t into recycling old ideas or following a certain formula, to be honest i’d love to just talk to some crazy on the street and get his incite on something totally off topic and whatever he says make that the video but this Fever Ray is far from simple, she just a has a great creative head on her shoulders.

As for Warpaint I heard it at Urban Outfitter while buying shoes, I love the recording style of this band a lot because i’d never listened to it if it was cleaned up, i’d probably think it was complete trash.

Kompakt TOTAL 10
We follow a lot of Kompakt on the blog, they actually have been a big influence on the Moodgadget label as in having a Pop Ambient compilation series, Michael Mayer’s IMMER mix series and the classic TOTAL series. I picked 4 tracks that I think really stand out for me while giving it a good listen. This Coma track been perfect for these middle of the night insomnia sessions i’ve been having, a ton of quiet drives that swell while you’re finally dozing off sounds lovely to me.

I’ve been trying to think of another album that samples tennis and nothing comes to mind besides this new DJ Koze track, kind of reminds of something Philip Sherburne would use in a mix to separate some 90’s shoegaze and the most recent Villalobos 12″.

Justus Köhncke should be in Sebastian Tellier’s position and greeting you at American Apparel with 7 inch vinyl and One Size see-thru tee shirts, Justus has been doing the sexy playful and distant slow dance music since I can remember. Dirk Leyers of Closer Musik does an outstanding edit here by taking the original to a 10 min mark.

Thomas Fehlmann of The Orb doesn’t receive enough credit for his work under his birth name, the man did a crazy record with Dabrye, a gorgeous album called Honig Pump, and now adds another class remix to his catalog for The Field.

Underworld+Paul White+Hud Mo+Calvin H.

Underworld - Beaucoup Fish
Underworld’s Jumbo will always go down as one of those songs that no music snob should feel right making fun of because its just an overall beautiful classic song with one of the best samples in the intro with the old guys talking about vests OR they’re just kidding themselves and their bitter and on one of these levels:
A. They listened to Underworld Beaucoup Fish way longer than all of us and now hate it because they showed up late to the other music genre parties.
B. They had a great experience at Love Parade hearing it as a raver but some sweaty muscle dude walked by and just smeared body sweat across their face and every time they hear “Nice lil vest, light!” they can still smell that sweat on their face.
C. they have a bad collection of music with not much depth and are very critical and own a lot of R.E.M. CD’s that their hiding for no reason and are too embarrassed to even share high school photos of themselves on facebook.

I remember someone was so kind enough to turn me onto Paul White on the blog and I just tried to search the comments but no luck to give them any credit. Paul White is pretty similar to Bullion(by the way, Bullion and Pilooski killed it last night, super nice guy, had dinner with him and told him about the blog and he dropped this amazing track that Busta Rhymes sampled to make Dangerous that blew my mind) but with a more silly side to him, really love the tracks and just soo much fun to listen to but a little short but hey it makes me press rewind.

Been waiting for a new Hudson Mohawke song forever, this bad boy has been floating around all day yesterday on twitter and blogs, the good people at Warp are nailing it this year. Rising 5 has this Onra feel to it but the highs and instruments really make your eyebrows raise in a good way.

To be honest I never listened to Calvin Harris, you know how you just see a musician’s name around certain brands and promotion that you just never get around to hearing what they do because they’re tied in with just odd pop culture that you’d never feel like you would enjoy whatever the person is offering creatively? well thats how I feel about Calvin Harris BUT when this song picks up after the intro I really had to throw all that other crap out the window that’s tied to Calvin Harris in my head, all in all pretty great remix work here Mr. Harris, is the album good?

ISO50 Music Exclusive: FREE MP3 EP

Cover by Alex Cornell

Cover by Alex Cornell

Most of the summer I have been going to shows almost 3 or 4 times a week and i’ve probably seen these 4 musicians (Shigeto, Mux Mool, Mingus Rude, and Mogi Grumbles) the most and all of them I noticed at some point would play a cover or edit of a song that they really liked and this is collection of those songs for the ISO50 blog for free folks.

Shigeto takes the classic by Astrud Gilberto and takes the Flying Lotus approach and gives it this great marriage of where gorgeous and head nodding meet.

Mingus Rude might be the newest to the bunch here, he is also Charles Trees for any of you that follow the Moodgadget label. To be honest I think this Fleetwood Mac edit might be the best i’ve ever heard of Fleetwood Mac, it never goes too noisy but just stays on this slower tip and just makes the original abit more for the dance floor.

We definitely needed this track for this EP from Mux Mool which was a crowd pleaser every time I heard it being played. Brian slows down the very popular song and makes it his own with his signature mixture of Mux Mool synths & hip-hop mashed together.

If you’ve been outside and to anything social this spring then you’ve heard this MGMT song plenty of times, Mogi Grumbles takes it to Justice cut up disco land and rides the track off into the sunset for peak hour play.

Danesi Caffe Branding

Danesi Logo
Danesi Space
Danesi Bags
Whenever I see Danesi Caffe cups I always mean to post the brand on the blog, I don’t know if its just the D logo in brown on white that grabs my eye every time but after seeing their site and looking at the coffee bag branding i’m a fan, now I just have to actually taste the stuff.

Engineers – Three Fact Fader

Engineers - Three Fact Fader
I’ve become a bigger fan of the Engineers the more and more the last LP grew older and I didn’t have new Engineers music to listen to. They did a remix for Bloc Party that did nothing for me, I wanted the remix to sound like what “The Fear Has Gone” sounds like on Three Fact Fader which is this new album. One thing I notice and it hit me like a ton of bricks is the song Clean Coloured Wire which heavily samples Harmonia’s song ‘Watussi‘ which we’ve posted on the blog before and don’t worry Harmonia approved it.
Here in the States I don’t see much love for this record, I wonder if any of the readers in the UK totally have a different story? is the new album huge there? not like Arctic Monkey’s huge you know what I mean. But getting back to the music, I don’t think there are many good shoegaze bands out there that get it, i’m not saying Engineers is the best example because the vocal is too dreamy, upfront, clear and sometimes makes me ask myself do I really like this like I say i do and then a nice noisy wall of sounds hushes that thought.

Sorcerer+Toto+The Antlers+Air

Sorcerer
You’ve heard Sorcerer on the blog before when he was one half of Windsurf multiple times and now with an LP under his belt like his partner Hatchback its a full on assault of laid back tracks coming out of the California. When these guys do disco I picture them doing it in the least stressful way by having their own hide out close to the beach where they grill and play synths until the breeze slows down and all the sails on the horizon head home.

What better way to keep the feeling going from that Sorcerer track by following it with Toto – Africa.

Prepare for a bit of downer with The Antlers LP, the tempo kinda of bums you out without even listening to the sad bastard lyrics BUT musically this Shiva song has some magic to it that keeps your chin up.

Air has been ruined for me by TV commercials, small plate restaurants playlists, loungey martini bars etc and I probably wouldn’t of done up their career differently if I were them. I usually check out everything they put out even though i’ll probably never put it on again, all I do is give it a listen and just go straight to Les professionnels and listen to the horns and smile, its almost like visiting grave in a weird and creepy way because the feelings I had for old Air were amazing at the time I liked them and now all I have memories of the times I heard the music for the first time.
