Grovesnor + Pallers + Wax Stag + Joakim

Grovesnor fills that void of what I thought Hot Chip and Jamie Lidell were going to do in their future but I don’t see this style coming from them. Grovesnor nails soft rock with soul, summer jam playlist night cap must have!

Sweden’s Labrador Records is on a tear, they just owned Europe with the recent drop of The Radio Dept. new album and now they introduce Pallers which might be on a softer less poppy tip yet still lush and dreamy.

I love a song that hones in on a sound that you love, a focused 8 bit melody usually gets me, maybe its my generation of video game systems, either way I should give Wax Stag more credit than that, beautiful track for Sega Genesis fantasy game lovers.

Don’t judge this song by its intro, i’m not so fond of it, give it a sec…..there it is now its good and dancefloor ready, definitely has hints of what grabbed me from some of the first DFA records.

Mark Kozelek Playlist

This might be a departure from what I post most days but I can’t pretend that this isn’t some of the strongest song writing out of my generation and maybe even the generation before me. Mark Kozelek is a pure talent when it comes to setting a tone and feeling that most can’t control when they hear his songs. Deadly as this playlist might seem for some since a beautiful sunny weekend is in store for the east coast I just think it needed to be done.

I didn’t include my 2 favorite Mark Kozelek songs since i’ve already posted them which are Mistress and Duk Koo Kim, if you need more then the wait isn’t too long, Sun Kil Moon’s next LP Admiral Fell Promises is slated for 7/13.

**Other artist specific playlist: Cocteau Twins

Walls+Korallreven+Shahs+Rollerskaters

So happy to be able to share this new project by Walls on Kompakt, the duo which is one part Allez Allez who have started a great mix series featuring Grovesnor(ex-drummer of Hot Chip) and Caribou(which I was going to share this week) have ventured into more guitar based material that gets me excited on how A+R will be going on at Kompakt from here on out. Walls is slow moving with hints of white noise that is completely in control, the release is highly recommended from start to finish.

Lately i’ve been trying to pick my brain because I feel like I never turn down a good Caribbean style song, you play dreamy synths that fit into a Balearic song with light guitar strumming? well then jump into my itunes! deep bongos, disco strings and chimes with water sounds are just bonuses like finding another M&M in my so called empty M&M wrapper. Korallreven is a perfect example of what I like, now trying to find a crowd that loves it in the USA is a whole different story.

When I hear this Shahs track and imagine the instrumental I automatically think it would be the perfect song to start out an episode of This American Life where a normal older man starts off his day by leaving his white picket fence home but starts walking by really weird things on the way to work. I picture the vocals sung by a drunk David Byrne which is a compliment to Shahs, its not a bad thing in my book.

Lead singer Andrew McKee is already doing another things besides The Young Friends, instead of the sunny bike ride sing alongs with friends he brings it into the gymnasium for a overnight lock-in dance party by the punch bowl jam.

Charles Bergquist Projection Collection

After seeing these videos I know now that if Charles Bergquist is doing visuals for a musician in Brooklyn then i’m there. It’s hard to find good visuals these days at a show, a ton of it seems like bland web archive footage and is always an after thought, i’m really liking the subject matter that Chris chooses and the select and simple effects done that fit the music.

Young Friends+Depreciation Guild+Laurel

The Young Friends are teens from Arizona, teens!!! like 17 and 18 years old! making surf / 50’s pop, that blows my mind. Okay now that i’m over that and feel like an old man i’m more than happy to have heard them since its the first record that oozes youth and summer flings like having a gusher for the first time. If you like it stream the LP here with a free MP3 and check them out in the video below.

Going from one young band to another The Depreciation Guild are on the other side of teen feelings, the more sentimental teens. The guitars sound like your favorite early 90s dream pop band that you thought might finally fill that void of Slowdive being done.

Ann Arbor, MI / Brooklyn’s Laurel Halo I think made a song that people might of wished what the new Knife album should have sounded like. With her vocals set in the background while she plays dreamy keys (she plays that part live! I saw it, very impressive) I can put this song on repeat day after day.

M.I.A. went for it, her new video is relentless, shocking and NSFW but that doesn’t make me stop loving this track, should be a huge summer hit at the rowdy outdoor rock parties.

Medications+Daedelus+Astronomer+Dibiase

Cover art by: Mark Weaver

For the new Medications album they picked up Mark Weaver to do the art, I think it came out great, one of the best covers i’ve seen all year. I think it sits perfect with this song Brasil ’07 which is on a Sea and Cake, Lemon Jelly, etc vibe.

I was going to post some more Daedelus then this along with an interview or guest post but he never returned my emails so his loss, which is a bummer, here’s my favorite track from the new LP entitled Righteous Fists of Harmony. What a great month for beats! this, Bonobo, Mux Mool and Free The Robots, pretty on point.

I’ve grabbed up as much of this Glasser stuff as I can, the remixers seem to be more up my alley over the originals which isn’t a bad thing. I like a good 9 minute track with girl vox sometimes that isn’t trying to tear my face off.

The best name in hip hop since Silkk The Shocker is Mr. Dibiase hands down, Mux Mool put me onto him, sounds like Blackalicious playing video games at Barcade(for the Brooklyn readers).

Spirituals + Light Asylum + Ross 154 + Sega

Some of you might have bought the new Caribou record this week and want more or even prefer the old Manitoba sound well a nice new LP from Spirituals can fill this void in your life very quickly. The self titled LP from Spirituals has beautiful melodic swells and full of surprising light drives and builds using everything from woodblocks and warm organs.

The drums may remind you of Phil Collins and her vocals might hint at a tougher Annie Lennox and the synths might have picked up where Q Lazzarus(Goodbye Horses aka the song from Silence Of The Lambs) left off but there is one thing for sure this sound collected is new and fresh.

This is a rough rip from youtube so please excuse the quality but if I could say it does add a little charm to this track. Ross 154 is Newworldaquarium a Danish musical genius in my mind if you followed him on labels like MOS or Delsin. Using classic sequencing of underground raw Chicago House and Aphex Twim SAW like melodies makes me feel like i’m glowing every time I hear it.

Reaching deep into my archives I had to pull this out, maybe the best game ever for the Sega Genesis was Sonic The Hedgehog but soundtrack wise Streets Of Rage 2 was untouchable, here is a intro track that some people say was just be a rip of Enigma‘s Sadeness but the melody added on top of it always made my 12 year old nod.

Newworldaquarium: The Dead Bears [2008]

Jakub why do you post music like Avon Sparkle that sounds like the matchless soundtrack to a late night exploration of Africa’s west coast shoreline you may ask? or expect us to melt and mold with the warm of Kirana’s Lament that might make us feel like were on vacation in a humid jungle that has us surrounded by sugar cane and panthers? how do you expect us to be able to listen to NoworldbutU when the molasses pace might only be perfect when i’ve fallen asleep in a dark room in the afternoon on a sunny day where I lay there listening and stare at the dust floating by in the sunlight that is leaking in? well I just thought you might like something different for this late night post.

Shigeto + Odd Nosdam + GLK + Aziz Ansari

Shigeto’s EP came out today, you may have heard of him since he recently remixed Tycho’s Adrift. Shigeto is a master at delicate detailed melody and stop and start rhythms over tracks that grow and accelerate seamlessly, the Semi Circle EP is a nice sampler for things to come.

Odd Nosdam’s Up In Flames is like a DJ Shadow record stuck in a good groove but with a ton of attention put in the delivery of that loop, I just wish this song was longer.

One artist that really impresses me is The Gaslamp Killer, this EP is good but not great yet he’s a proper example of the perfect showmen, an entertainer to the hardcore and passionate fan base that goes out to shows.

Now for some Aziz Ansari, fyi NSFW.

Ducktails+Delorean+CrystalCastles+Laid

Sometimes its a challenge to post 4 songs you absolutely like every day, like today all I wanted to do was post this amazing Ducktails track which you can preorder the 7″ here. The track just seemed enough, its perfect for a Monday morning headphone getaway.

I also wanted to share this Delorean’s track which is what I put on when I want to pretend the new MGMT record is good because these guys did a better record that will probably hit the same crowd hopefully plus Delorean has a great House music meets tropical thing going.

I have to also include the highly leaked Crystal Castles LP single that is pretty much on every blog, I love the single Doe Deer but its abit rowdy for a Monday morning so this track will be a good preview I guess, its a bit pop for my taste though, like some kind of Little Boots throw away track.

I want to end this on a high note which is this Laid Back track, if you’re a wedding DJ and feel soulless then drop this.
