BDDW – SoHo

Tyler Hayes’ furniture label BDDW is a favorite of mine. The prices are — as with nearly all well-designed furniture — off the charts, but it’s always fun to look. I haven’t had a chance to check out their SoHo, NYC showroom in person but Trendland has a nice gallery by Patricia Thompson (who also has some great shots at her Flickr) detailing the interior.

I’m getting a rustic-take-on-Dieter-Rams vibe from that second one. Really nice stuff.

I had the pleasure of DJ’ing their Crosby Street launch party in ’02, and the sound system was comprised of custom BDDW speakers.. which actually sounded great. Speaking of Dieter – you should come by the Vitsœ shop here in NYC next time your come through. We have some of his old Braun Hi-Fi gear sprinkled throughout the shop.

Last time I was in the showroom I looked at the joinery a little bit too closely, apparently (perhaps I was admiring it?), and they tried to kick me out because their designs are “proprietary.” As far as I recall I’m not in the furniture design, building, or appropriating business. Furthermore, I once heard about these guys — Jacques Adnet, George Nakashima, something like that, ring any bells? Ever heard of them? … strikingly similar designs. I know it was summertime and I looked sort of casual in there, but seriously BDDW, are you kidding me? I could have had my Julia Roberts moment, but I decided to spend my $15,000 elsewhere.

My parents are in new york right now, I told them to go to this showroom last night, they loved it!

  8. The play between contemporary and rustic, man-made and natural is amazing. Very well thought out and beautiful. I love the turntable.
