Architectural photographer (sounds like a pretty good gig right?) Benny Chan’s Traffic! series depicts aerial views of rush hour traffic around Los Angeles, a place that’s no stranger to the phenomenon. Beautifully shot, I’d love to have one of these huge on a wall somewhere to remind me of how we — sort of — have it better here in SF. Click the images for (very) large versions.
More shots over at GOOD
I’ve been trying to figure out a way to get myself into a helicopter here in LA. The second image is probably my least favorite spot in all of LA. It’s where the 10 and 405 cross (Olympic and Sawtelle looking North) and it’s a nightmare. Last one looks like the 5 and 134 split.
Killer shots all around.
Architectural photographer…aka my dream job. I love aerial highway photography no matter how many times i see it. These look great, and with the traffic they give an interesting look at the scale of a person compared to our impact on our environment.
For some fantastic freeway footage, check out “Trafficopter”, shot in Montreal in 1972 – http://www.nfb.ca/film/trafficopter/
The layer of snow that comes into the film at 5.20 makes the footage look even better.
How fitting that you posted this today. I live in SF and my ride from my house to work was quite hectic and my boyfriend pretty much just had it with the traffic. These images are nice to see not only aesthetically but also in that I would definitely choose SF traffic over any of those others sort of way.
I like how your eye goes straight to the different densities of cars. Architectural photographers really do have great jobs. I’ve always been a little jealous of my friend Robb Williamson who shoots my landscape architectural work. While I’m sitting at my desk he’s out traveling! His work (and some of mine) can be seen here. http://www.williamsonimages.com/
As “hard” as these freeways are in reality, the 3rd photo somehow reminds me of the flexibility and movement of spaghetti noodles…
Excellent photos!
Great find. Thanks for sharing.
I’m working on a concept photo project as well, taking pictures or retail establishments after hours.
