Camera+40 Thieves+Soccio+Flying Lotus

Camera Obscura
I really never got into Camera Obscura, Belle & Sebastian, Death Cab For Cutie, The Decemberists, Wilco etc in the past but I always knew everyone else had it covered but after looking for more music thru blogs I am trying out everything. This song “Keep It Clean” is really nice, kinda reminds me of if Stereolab didn’t oversaturate their old sound. The cover has a great layout and is pretty Indietastic(one of the best Human Giant skits featuring the Other Music record store).

If you’re liking any of the slower disco on the blog check out the label Permanent Vacation which usually features some great compilations. This 40 Thieves track came out on Permanent Vacation last year and has been on repeat on my computer and also has these great elements that warm a crowd up early on to get people ready to fill the floor. Once you have the dance floor filled this edit by Prince Language of Gino Soccio might be my favorite song to play and dance to.

Los Angeles indie Hip Hop had some great moments in 2008, Flying Lotus and Samiyam paved the way for a lot of new faces. One of my favorite tracks was Roberta Flack and this remix by Mike Slott kept all the outstanding parts in there highlighted but added some great new pieces, well worth your time to check out.

  1. Hey Jakub,
Thanks so much for always posting such great music. It has opened many new doors for me. As an aside, I was wondering why you and Scott don’t put up one of his Tycho tracks for a remixing contest. Many of us amateur and professional producers would do it just because we respect you guys and love Scott’s music. You could post the ones you like on the blog. It might even be worth a limited EP release if they are good enough. Thanks.

wilco is great. one of the best american bands around, i think. i once had a discussion with someone about if you were to describe your country with 2 things in pop culture, i said america would be wilco and prairie home companion, at least that works for me…

You should listen to Ryan Adams then… and you’ll never be the same again 😉

  4. sean patrick says:

i like him too. i think he has gotten a bit too poppy in most recent efforts. i also like supersilent. 🙂

  5. Jakub says:

Is Supersilent a Ryan Adams project?

  6. sean patrick says:

no, but thats a pretty funny thought.
i thought it was a mild dig on my tastes, so i threw in a nod to hard improvisational jazz/noise to get my, ahem, “cred” back. all in jest.
if you havent heard of this label, you really should look into it. one of the coolest!!!

    Horacio –

ha! some ryan adams stuff is like that. however some of it is, in my opinion, fantastic. the albums of his that came out in 2005 are good. i like this song quite a bit….

    jakub-
what!?!?! B&S is the best! so many albums, and (almost) all of them are classics. you gotta give them deeper listen. this camera obscura sounds exactly like an older B&S song when the girl sings more often (which I actually don’t prefer, never thought she was a great vocalist). anyways, just listen to “the loneliness of a middle distance runner” and “piazza, new york catcher” on the subway and your life will forever be changed. or you’ll just like belle and sebastian more…. one of those.

Never gotten into the whole indiefolk thing(a little too hipster for me), except for a couple bands. Although, there was a band I saw last November called Annuals, I hadn’t even heard of them, they’re kind of an alternative band with strong folky influences and wow did they blow me away. They started off sounding minimalistic, and the tracks just swell into these grand monolith anthems. Check out their song, “Brother”.
Love the Flying Lotus remix btw! and the Human giant clip hahahahahaha!

  14. sean patrick says:

i think “indie folk” has been around then the current permutation of hipster.
i mean, dont discount an entire genre of music due to the others that listen to it. its all according to taste though…

  15. Me gusta muchisimo este grupo, pero me gusta todavia más Belle and Sebastian…
