Architect Craig Steely has done an outstanding job renovating this high-rise loft apartment/penthouse. His inspiration came from mood of 70’s space rock and ambient music artists such as Cluster, Brian Eno and Michael Rother. This is really evident in the floor to ceiling ambient light installation on one side of the main living area. The light wall displays videos that are slowed down and each pixel is paired to a 2 inch LED behind the wall. This is what creates the large 8-bit-like pattern. Not only is this light wall really great, but the view is quite possibly one of the best in all of San Francisco. In the pictures after the jump you can see Alcatraz Island and the surrounding bay.

Considering that I’m currently in the process of relocating, it doesn’t help to be looking at such amazing apartments like these—the time will come though.

Came across these random mid-century interior images in a Flickr stream today. The more I look at these images, the more I want to flash back to the past and interview the designers. Their thought process would be invaluable.

At first I wasn’t a TRON fan, but it has definitely grown on me. After seeing this TRON Suite at the world-famous Swedish Icehotel in Jukkasjärvi, I might have to watch the movie. The designers of this suite, Ben Rousseau and Ian Douglas-Jones, utilizing ultra-low energy lights that appear to be frozen in or behind the ice—brilliant!

The whole thing reminds me of a nightclub. In fact I wouldn’t be surprised to see a night club made of ice pop up next door to the hotel sometime soon. What are your thoughts on this—would you stay here?

Any architecture that is built with nature in mind, is made with concrete and has wooden interior elements, immediately gets an instant like from me. There’s just something about the combination of wood, concrete and trees that I love.

In this case the trees were included by law. Local construction codes of Mar Azul, Beunos Aires, Argentina actually restrict the removal of trees. Instead of relocating the house the architects, Martín Fernández de Lema and Nicolás F. Moreno Deutsch, decided to build the house around them. Leaving the end result a beautifully designed, wide open house that is seemingly the perfect spring or summertime residence.

This stunning Spanish monument to modernism is located in Madrid, Spain. The “Delifin & Postigo House” is the residence of fashion designer David Delfin and photographer Gorka Postigo. Incredible; can’t get enough of high ceilings like this.

My dreams have been answered, the good people at OfficePod are keeping the hopes alive for prefab dreamers by making more Prefab shelters. For a measly 15,000£ you can have this beautiful office space, seriously I want this, maybe they have layaway? or need someone to display it in Brooklyn? count me in.

I am in the process of moving into a new apartment in San Francisco. Amidst the endless furniture shopping, cleaning, painting, and waiting during absurdly long delivery-time windows, I have been planning the construction of the ultimate apartment-based graphic design studio. As I’ve always set up shop in a room with another purpose (currently my studio also serves as my bedroom and recording area), the prospect of having a dedicated design room is very exciting. I figure this move will be a good opportunity to really take my time and build the perfect work room — from the paint on the walls, to the the table tops and filing cabinets — every detail will be meticulously considered.

The room itself is 11.5′ x 9′, plus a generous closet. The purpose of the room will be a place where I can work, file, cut, store, display, print and create. Basically a little graphic design super room. Unfortunately there will not be space for my music set up, so my guitars are going to have to bunk with me in the bedroom. You’ll notice there is also a small window. Ideally, for consistency reasons, I would prefer to have no window — but I’ve come around on the issue in hopes of the keeping studio morale high…

I had to scan this Home Entertainment Center out of a vintage magazine for you all, imagine just having that control panel to drool over and look at or it just being part of your interior architecture of your home. I love that there is soo much space used with beige panels, buttons, reels, and wall design, thats what makes a ton of the design in the past more admirable to me sometimes.

A friend showed me a place called Meet, seems like a nice spot for meetings but the idea is a bit too forced/corporate feeling for my taste. This is from their About Us page: “Marc and Sara Schiller, who realized that there was a need for a dedicated space in New York where creative and business executives could gather to re-imagine a business, re-invent a product or pitch potential clients. Advertising agencies, top consumer brands and television networks are among their enthusiastic clientele.”

I’ve posted on him before, but today I saw some nice shots of Verner Panton’s work that I’d hadn’t yet seen posted up at the suberb “but does it float” blog. That green ceiling is looking very familiar…
