Artikulation

Artikulation

In 1956, György Ligeti composed an amazing electronic piece called “Artikulation”.

In 1970’s, Rainer Wehinger created a visual map to the recordings. Some awesome guy out there scanned the images and synced them with the audio. Thanks, guy!

Lotus Plaza+Adelaide+Mogwai+Explosions

Lotus Plaza
When I saw Deerhunter live I remember asking myself I hope the guitarist on the right of the stage puts out a record, seems like he was doing most of the melody guitar and effected parts in the songs like some mini Johnny Greenwood. Well that happened and Lotus Plaza did a killer job on the record but I especially love this A Threaded Needle song, it has so many catchy elements of lo-fi post rock. Everything sits in the mix perfectly as well, never asking for your attention just gentle guitar screeches and a vocal that sits in the backseat, couldn’t be happier with the result of this project.

Recently we posted nostalgia filled Adelaide videos on the blog but I can’t just leave you with those, here’s the song Games Without End off their self released EP, this has hints of Sea and Cake and Mercury Program all over the EP but they take it a step closer to what I want to hear which is film soundtrack music that is equal to a Cinnabun in the cinnamon roll world, just an overwhelming ooze of frosting and warmth. If you like this check out other projects from the band like Small Sails or Ethan Rose.

A pretty low key one from Mogwai, definitely nice to lose yourself in this one and think your somewhere else.

This Explosions In The Sky song might be the rowdiest Monday song ever posted just epic the factor alone makes it feel like you won Tour de France and the World Cup at the same time, don’t use it as a exercise song either, you break something important.

KEXP’s “Music That Matters” : Alex Ruder

KEXP
If I had a car or satellite radio i’d probably follow the radio a little more but I don’t have either really, I do try though to catch Alex Ruder on KEXP whenever I can because of his diverse taste on one of radio’s best commercial-free KEXP(Seattle). Its kind of nice to get thru 30 brand new songs within less than 70 mins and a get a little info along the way, definitely worth checking out.

Juan Maclean+Junior Boys+Terje+Yacoub

The Juan MacLean
April 7th is a huge release date for electronic juggernauts The Juan MacLean and Junior Boys, both putting out Best Of like albums that you’ll probably see on many lists this year. This song Work is just perfection in my eyes of what i’d love to take in the studio, it has the dark drive and its sexy beyond belief. Those distant Tangerine Dream synths and rolling leads just grab me right from when they start. The Juan MacLean does jam out on his new album, full of pop length songs and the vox upfront, reminds me a little of how Adult. started out meets Human League.

Todd Terje makes America’s Horse With No Name a bit easier to play out for all the slow disco DJ’s out there, a lovely simple edit.

I found this Manoo remix of Yacoub on a mix by Culoe De Song, just a real nice groove, i’m sure when i’m older i’ll be listening to only this kind of music, all my friends and I will have ponytails, steel round framed eyeglasses and our world music vinyl collections will be sprawled across our living rooms, almost crushing the newly mined gold bird cages holding our rare cockatoos and sometimes even being bookended at times by 500+ euro authentic African rain sticks, while the house reeks of Nag Champa and the kiln is burning my latest failed attempt at a clay vase.

Praveen & Benoit + o9 + Mount Kimbie

Praveen & Benoît - Songs Spun Simla Remixes
Praveen & Benoît’s Songs Spun Simla Remixes has a few lovely surprises with remixes from our favorite mix contributor Tom Croose doing a slow shuffle remix to names like Daedelus, Machinedrum, and David Last but one of my personal favorites is this Shigeto remix called The Tunnel is Still There (Shigeto’s Deep Tunnel Diving Remix). The Shigeto remix grabs a certain energy from the song and runs with it, below is video for the remix that HeadUp did using footage from Koyaanisqatsi and Powaqqatsi.

o9 released Church of the Ghetto PC in 2004 on Schematic who have gave us Phoenecia and Richard Devine. The song Terminal Silver has a hint of the ever classic Alberto Balsalm by Aphex Twin but its a bit more digital and bubbly.

I’ve been hearing about this Mount Kimbie duo for some time now, pretty nice stuff and its kind of hard to pin down their sound and style. Either way its really nice to listen to especially this song WIlliam which has these foggy PBS sounds to it but moves into a nice

One Second Bridge + Canyon Country

One Second Bridge
I couldn’t help myself but these 2 bands are very unrated and deserve 2 songs posted by each group.

One Second Bridge seems to be a Spanish duo that makes lovely faint daydream songs, N°2 really grabbed my attention because around the 1:26 min mark this looped echo comes in and steals your attention and fades out, its what I can only describe as the perfect interruption. Sucio Cielo Azul is a little more slow going but still stunning and at a perfect length.

Don’t mix up Cloudland Canyon with Canyon Country, Canyon Country has plenty of slow post showgaze vocals and definitely a hint of The Doves and/or GOOD Air.

RA112 – Mark E Slow Disco Mix

Mark E
Usually every Monday morning I head over to Resident Advisor to check out what weekly dj mix is up. My all time favorite mix on there is this Mark E mix, It was the 112th one up, I think they’re in the 140’s now . This one really kicks off at the 11:30 minute mark and its literally smooth sailing and slow head nodding in your chair(if you’re working and listening) from there on. Some of the highlight tracks are the LTJ Experience and the Marvin Gaye edits but once you get into the meat and potatoes of it I personally lose it, its like watching saltwater taffy, milk chocolate, and crayons being made in front of you on repeat all at the same time, its just this perfect slow tempo and you end up losing track of time.

Naujoks+Osborne+Swayzak+Moondog

christian naujoks
Dial’s new signing Christian Naujoks shows that the Hamburg based label isn’t just sticking to deep minimal 4/4 music, Naujoks album is full of exciting new sounds like Maladies which is just vibraphone and piano together and somehow it still feels like it fits perfectly on Dial, I should of turned my vibraphone techno demo into them in years ago, oh well.

Osborne(Todd Osborn) aka Soundmurderer aka Clutch aka TNT aka Superstructure(who put out Clone A which was a midi version of the whole Kid A album, its nuts) is one gifted man, i’ve only got to meet him a few times and every time i’ve been lost for words so it only gets weird hah. Todd has an array of unique things about him like building his own computers, instruments, and even a hovercraft. He is also one of the only people I know that has this many monikers but actually makes use of them and are needed since his sound varies so often. As for the song Fire i’m pretty speechless, its simple and classic disco but this is the same guy that puts out ragga-jungle and ghetto-tech, so it just makes me think about what else he has in his vault.

I think Swayzak’s Low-Rez Skyline holds a certain place in my heart for easing me off techno nearly 10 years ago, it was like Ritalin for my friends that only thought techno was for dancing. Its a pretty easy going and perfect song to put on for someone that you may know that needs help getting off club music.

I know i’m bookending today with 2 vibraphone songs but its Moondog a blind American composer who was a terrrific street musician and also built many instruments, he definitely needed to be in the same post as Christian Naujoks and Todd Osborn.

As for the video below, its for Osborne’s song The Count which is on the same EP as Fire, the footage is from The New Dance Show(Detroit’s American Bandstand) that was played on a Southeast Michigan public access channel in the evening on the weekend in the early 90’s if I remember correctly, I remember sitting infront of the tv watching it with my little sister.

Osborne – The Count Video

Lukid+Viul+Deadbeat+Blackbelt

Lukid
Went to my first Dub Wars a few weeks ago which is a monthly in New York that usually is mostly Dubstep, since then i’ve been hooked on the really low end heavy tracks like Lukid’s Slow Hand Slap, its hard to listen to if you don’t have good speakers because a lot of fun in listening to the songs is the ultra clean warmth the kick has.

Recently we hosted a mix that featured this Viul song Wound Cotton Wound which is out this week and includes a Benoit Pioulard remix. Viul is an ex-band member of Esmae which Benoit was the drummer and Viul played guitar. I love the control on the range in the static sound Viul makes, its more inviting to new listeners and half way thru he lightly eases in acoustic guitar and pulls back on the noise, a perfect song to listen to all the way thru for friends that haven’t heard of Fennesz.

I haven’t heard from Deadbeat in ages but he was one of the first consistent Minimal Dub producers around and released on the great ~scape label out of Germany. Organ In The Attic Sings The Blues cuts out the MCing and generic raggae sound and plays around in the more interesting yet always enjoyable experimentation of new sounds in a genre thats been around for ages.

Norway is pumpin’ out the slow disco producers left n’ right and they all have been pretty impressive especially Blackbelt Andersen who has a new record out that is self titled. Reminds me a little of what I loved about Swayzak’s Snowboarding In Argentina which i’ll post later this week.

On a side note I never get to thank you all enough for checking out the blog and the music daily that we get to share with you. It really means a lot to me when I find out any of you go out and support the musicians hard work by just buying a $.99 song or when you just find a new song here that you want to listen to over and over by just streaming it, all of you are a pretty amazing in my book.

Lusine+Moderat+The Books+Voss

Lusine - Language Barrier
Lusine does it again with a gorgeous ambient album called Language Barrier, I don’t know how he does it but he cuts up the lyrics and they still sound like honey being poured onto baby oil, makes me want to bash any music I make out the window using that cricket bat from Spinal Tap.

Modeselektor + Apparat = Moderat, I wasn’t a big fan of Modeselektor besides one song that i’ll post next time but i’ll buy anything that has Apparat on it. This pairs up nicely with the Telefon Tel Aviv album, I really need to sit with this record again because only a few tracks grabbed me. A New Error has that colossal analog drive to it that is always nice to lose yourself in for a few miniutes.

I was doing my best to steer clear of this Dark Was The Night compilation just because I felt like everyone already had it and no one needed to read about it but here it is The Books feat. Jose Gonzalez covering Nick Drake and all its glory, all joking aside this is an amazing cover and love both the musicians doing the cover.

DJ Koze just put out a CD that compiles all the remixes he did over the years, I especially love this Heiko Voss one and the Matthew Dear one is pretty outstanding as well.
