John Talabot + Slava + 2562 + Tom Croose

Artwork by Peter Alexander

So impressed by this John Talabot track, it could fit in a slow disco mix or the newest UK beat set, perfect cross over, I wish Hercules And Love Affair came back with a whole album that sounded like this.

What I love about the Software Label is that it releases music mainly made up of sounds that were used more in the 80s-90s, there’s loads of nostalgia oozing in their sound from synths you might have heard in commercials from your childhood to faint memories of tv shows that never popped up again but stuck in your head to this day. This Slava track is just that for me, those electronic chorus pads and the key changes do it for me.

2562 keeps this listening session less complex beat wise and more like the repetitive sounds of a locomotive struggling to untangle itself from years of sitting in a dark jungle covered in vines.

Our old friend Tom Croose has been working on music nonstop, recently was featured on Pitchfork with his edit of Sandro Perri. His style has become this thoughtful vintage south american comfort meets delicate melody yet never too fragile to play for a dance floor early in the night.

Young Montana+Knxwledge+CFCF+Z. Christ

I always laugh at Boards Of Canada comparisons, where do you personally draw the line? does this sound like them to you? I can hear someone thinking it about this song, I can smell the gears turning in their heads but in all honesty I think this track is one of more fresh sounding uses of vintage synths coming from “Beat Music”, a job well done by Mr. Young Montana?

I wish this Knxwledge track was #1 on the pop music charts.

Probably the most exciting producer that dabbles in house music and quickly pulls himself right out and just focuses on composition is CFCF. Lately, he really hasn’t touched on anything bright enough for the dancefloor but continually is coming up with the most enjoyable listens.

I’d have a lot more faith in the youth if it was just a bunch of Zach Christ’s making beats, with his latest remix he never makes it too complex for your brain to follow along. Thats really important to me these days because off beat textured percussive pulses are being pushed to their limits.

Trentemoller + H Chip + Lemonade + Estate

What a rework by Trentemoller, only a true talent can keep the emotional tie to the original. This moody loop could go on for an hour and i’d not even think once to turn it off, perfect amounts of rhythm especially the last minute, I want an extended version, HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

With Hot Chip members floating around doing their own thing you’d wonder if the quality is going to slip? it hasn’t and they’ve only bulked up there live presence with Flutes. The only issue is its stealing from the core of Kompakt, Areal and Border Community’s bread and butter from 5+ years ago.

A lot of music thats coming out these days that has romantic connection with the softer side of pop in the 80s is good but Lemonade seems to be doing it the best with their single Neptune, I hope they get the same or if not more love than the new Tanlines album.

Sometimes when bands leave off a song from an album you’d have your doubt on quality or consistency, with Real Estate I didn’t see that happening so when I grabbed up this b-side I wasn’t surprised to like it from start to finish. See for yourself……………told ya.

F. Romeau + Holter + Cage & Aviary + Terje

If you want an easy to swallow hip album that you can listen to all the way thru that gets you more than a glimpse of whats going on in true House Music thats good and now then this Fort Romeau album is it. Track after track this album doesn’t disappoint on the listening end but I have some sample issues with it, if you’re from Detroit or Chicago or Berlin and you’ve been buying House records for the last 15 years then you’ll probably hear what i’m talking about.

I’ve not been able to hand select vocalists that I love ever, its still by a song by song basis, even Mark Kozelek, Bjork and Bill Corgan fall into this category. I do however love to share vocalists I do like more and more here on the blog. Julia Holter has one of those voices that I wouldn’t kick out of bed, it has that airy distance that isn’t showing off and is easily respectable. She experiments and also doesn’t grasp for your approval, you usually can’t even guess what is coming next.

^ Look at that album cover up there, I had to check this release out. I’m not sure what the whole story is behind this record is because the names of the tracks seem to be pairs of to different titles or musicians. I enjoyed this because I imagine this being the intro sound of a Gary Numan and Byrne/Eno live show that never happened.

If its Todd Terje it’s going on the blog, I have proof in the history to prove that, end of discussion.

Grimes + COYB + Dntel + Mirrorring

MUSIC POSTS ARE BACK FOR GOOD. Please excuse the vacation.

Like many i’ve been on a Grimes kick, Oblivion is a natural first love but my nostalgic tastes sway towards Genesis because of the Enya traits of the intro vocals.

One of my favorite vocal melodies has to be in this song, when Jannis sings “I try and have little fun, but stayin away would be smart, cause I would rather be alone, there’s no change in my heart“, get me every time, its even more powerful live.

Dntel is back channeling his earlier work, I hear some cut up Marumari which is a big YES in my book and you can’t hate that cover. Looks like Geotic will guest on it, should be solid and unique listen especially since DJ Koze is putting it out.

Kranky is on a roll this year, probably the hottest label to follow for beauty, its honestly sitting 4 or 5 levels higher than any label out there easily with there catalogs output the last 9 months. Only fitting they share the Grouper and Tiny Vipers collab with the world. If you need to introduce Drone music to a girl then this is your best bet guys.

Musical Spectrum Analysis

Musical Spectrum Analysis is a really interesting take on Spectrograms. Developed by Jon-Kyle Mohr, a designer/programmer/musician and member of the Cargo Collective team, and Lee Martin, a developer at SoundCloud, who built a generative incarnation with Canvas and the SoundCloud API, which can be located at spectrogr.am.

What you are observing above is basically this (as described by Jon-Kyle Mohr):

Sound frequencies are displayed as they are heard. Lower frequencies are mapped low (bottom) to high (top). Brightness is determined by amplitude.

Sweeping tones and rhythmic patterns create intricate structures. The circular form is in memorial of dead formats; the CD, MiniDisc and others. R.I.P.

Andrew Ohlman, who also happens to be a member of the Cargo Collective team, compiled a Quartz sketch which does similar things called Circular Spectrogram.

You can download the Circular Spectrogram application here to create your own visuals (currently only available for Mac users).

Sufjan/Shigeto + Burial/FourTet + Blondes

This Shigeto remix of Sufjan Stevens just got leaked out about a week ago, a beautiful take on how to remix a different genre, Shigeto keeps the feel of the original and gives us this thread that unravels this tune into pile of silk cloth to lay on and rest.

Probably the most inviting to new listeners of the Four Tet / Burial collabs comes Nova. This could be an Enya / Ricardo Villalobos collab which really sounds appealing right now and i’m only saying that because I wish this hit a broader audience so people could understand what the world is missing out on here.

Its time for early 2000’s Tech House to come back, the melody is important again! pull out your old Traum, Kompakt, and Border Community records because they’ll blow these young kids minds, Blondes definitely know what there doing.

The Violet Crown App At SXSW

With everyone heading to or already at SXSW this week and next, I thought this would be a good time to post about the location aware music apps that Bluebrain has been doing. They’ve already done one for The National Mall and Central Park ( Listen To The Light ), the new one The Violet Crown is based around Austin and SXSW. Basically it’s, as Bluebrain describes it, “a musical composition, available exclusively as a free iPhone app, that uses the phone’s built-in GPS to alter the music as the listener traverses the area – each street and intersection is tagged with various pockets of sound, turning the festival grounds into a musical ‘choose-your-own-adventure’.”

You can download the free app here through iTunes.

It’s a really cool concept and as of yet, I haven’t been able to try out the other versions from The National Mall or Central Park ( Listen To The Light ), The Violet Crown will be the first.

For those that can’t make it out to SXSW this year, I dug a little further to get some more of the background on The Violent Crown app and some process. Ryan Holladay of Bluebrain went over the technical info and he sent me a few screen grabs and a map from the programming end of things. He also did a breakdown of how it works, which I think is really interesting.

“What you are looking at in these shots is the app simulator running running on our desktop — this is a way that we can remotely test the music without having to be in Austin and simulate the experience of, say, walking from one block to another and hearing how the music changes. As you can see, there are many in a single area, often with so many overlapping that it’s difficult to tell visually where each of them are located. The crosshairs in the middle represent the location of the listener, the various circles indicate the size of the audio track and the colors the state the audio is in: Blue, as you probably guessed, is playing, while yellow is cued and red is disengaged.

Because, by design, the app basically has to be ready for whichever direction you move, what we have is a system that prepares the audio to be dropped in at any given point and at the correct interval by preloading audio in every direction within a certain proximity. So, for instance, if you were to begin walking from Frontage Rd towards Congress Ave, halfway up 4th Street it will have prepared the tracks waiting for you when you arrive at Red River Street. But, when you reach an intersection, the audio to your left and right is also waiting for in case you chose that direction. Once it’s realized you’ve moved on, it drops those tracks to save processing power until you turn around and re-approach.”

To see what it’s all about check out the Making Of video below, which gives you a detailed explanation of what it does and how they actually built the one for Central Park ( Listen To The Light ).
