Yes Studio: The Stands

pastedGraphic
Seen this piece by Yes Studio around a few times but never had a full size version to post until Paddy Duke sent me this one. Very nice stuff going on here, as Paddy points out these are obviously inspired by the Prisma book covers.

"Artwork created for the UK band. Inspiration came in the form of pre-1980s analogue hi-fi equipment. Using a reductive graphic approach, multiple designs were created, colours were mixed by hand and large format prints produced at K2 Screen, London. The resulting artwork was then re-photographed and used as the basis for a sleeve and poster campaign." – Yesstudio.co.uk

Arcade Fire Shadowbox

This was a poster from Arcade Fire’s Neon Bible tour that could be folded into what they described as a "shadowbox". Found it while searching for something to post alongside this song. Neon Bible is incredible, I still find it hard to believe they outdid themselves after 2004’s Funeral, but here we are.

BOAC Poster

Very nice colors from an old BOAC campaign. Could do without the clouds and the airplane but I suppose a concept like that would never make it past the marketing people without some of the obvious thrown in for good measure. Note the BOAC logo that is formed in the middle by the arrows, love it. Great fine print line at the bottom, perfect kerning. Unfortunately no info on the designer, anyone?

Design 232

Cover of Design Magazine 232; pretty damned clever. I’ve been planning on experimenting with printing then photographing certain elements for projects then recompositing them back into an image. This makes me realize I need to start working on that sooner than later.

J. Casey: Three Exhibitions

File this one under "Things I’d never seen until now but somehow influenced everything I’ve ever done". I suddenly want to move to Massachusetts and work at MIT. This is the sort of design that makes me lament the fact I did not study design in school.  How could I have gone all these years practicing design and never been aware of such an amazing talent? Sadly Casey passed away in 1992.

Prague Street Posters

Design is alive and well in Prague. There seems to be a very strong street poster scene there and unlike in San Francisco, the posters are actually well designed. I am not sure if this is a function of the fact that most designers in California are busy at agencies doing web design or that Prague just happens to produce great print designers. Whatever the case may be, it was great to be able to walk around and observe my favorite design medium in it’s natural habitat: pasted up on walls and poles, wet, decaying, torn, and looking magnificent. The great part is that no one seems to be taking down older posters so in some places the posters were stacked almost two inches thick. Some of the front layers would be torn away exposing layer after layer of old posters beneath, amazing stuff.

After going though all the shots from Prague I realized how many I had to posters so I decided to split the post off into two parts. I will be posting the other shots from Prague tomorrow.

Tokyo 2016

Caught this on the way out of the subway on my last day in Tokyo.  Not quite an Otl Aicher caliber piece, but good nonetheless. (caveat: I color corrected it a bit to give it a more muted vibe….couldn’t resist)
