Casino Versus Japan x ISO50

I’ll be doing visuals for Casino Versus Japan when he plays with Deerhunter and Real Estate this Saturday here in San Francisco. We’ve done this once before, at LPR in NYC. Should be a great night, see you out there.
10.30 – Deerhunter, Casino Versus Japan (w/ ISO50), Real Estate
@ Slim’s

And to answer Healthcare’s question in the comments, for the visuals I’m running the following:
– Macbook Pro
VDMX (modular live video software environment)
– OS X network MIDI protocol for tempo sync with Ableton Live
Akai MPD18 (might start using Novation Launchpad though, if I can get it to work with VDMX)

Here’s an pretty outdated discussion of the visuals setup. A lot has changed, but the core app (VDMX) is pretty much the same.

Tycho Live Photos

I just got back in from Toronto which was the last stop on the short Tycho tour we just did (I was joined by Dusty Brown and Zac Brown for the live sets). I just wanted to thank everyone so much for having us, we had a great time playing for you and couldn’t have asked for a better vibe. Our very own contributing writer Shelby White was on hand at the Seattle show to shoot with his 1D MK2. As you can see (above) the results were beautiful, he really captured the feel of the lighting that night. And that last one of Dusty is amazing!

I’m going to take a break from shows for a little bit here while I tie up some loose ends on the music front, but we’ll be hitting the road again — and making it to a lot more cities — once the album comes out and we have time for a proper tour.

Drake Flyer

I just put together this flyer for Tycho Toronto show at the Drake, which, as it turns out, is a free show as part of Scotiabank Nuit Blanche. I’m not sure if they’re printing them or if it’s web only.

Hope to see some of you out: Seattle 9/26, NYC 9/29, Toronto 10/02

Launch 2010: Indie Design & Music

Launch 2010 is going down this Saturday, July 31st and I’ll be displaying some design work as part of the event. I should have a good number of the giclees from the Studio Editions series up along with some unreleased stuff.

In case you missed it last year, Launch is Sacramento’s indie design and music festival. They sort of cover all the bases, showcasing the best of Sacramento music, design, and fashion. Being from Sacramento myself — a town I feel is often very much misunderstood — it’s great to see events like this that bring all the incredible talent this place has to offer together in one place.

The event goes from 6pm to 1:30am at the Artisan Gallery (1901 Del Paso Blvd, Sacramento). Admission is $10, a total steal considering the lineup. If you’re in the Sacramento area, you have no excuse not to go to this — besides all the art and music, it’s just a really good time. If you’re from the Bay Area or beyond, I urge you to make the drive out and get better acquainted with the art scene in Sacto, you won’t be disappointed. Hope to see you out there!

Dusty Brown CD Release Show: Saturday

Now that you have the free EP, you need to check out Dusty Brown live. Lucky for you it just so happens they’re playing a show as part of the CD release event for This City is Killing Me this Saturday. After attending countless Dusty Brown shows I can tell you it’s one of the most entertaining live sets around. As good as the recorded stuff is, they really take things to the next level with the live set and I think it’s where the music really shines through. You’ll also be able to snag a limited edition CD version of the EP which won’t be available anywhere else.

I’ll be making the drive down from SF, hope to see some of you out there.

The New Live Set

Practicing at Ira's Studio
Over the past few weeks I’ve been going through the process of putting together a live band for the Tycho show coming up on July 9th here in San Francisco. Those of you who’ve been to my past shows will know that I usually play solo and the focus is on the visuals and some light synth work. But this recent break from playing live (been working on the new album) has given me a chance to re-evaluate what I want the performances to be about and it’s also afforded me some time to put into developing the whole thing a little more. The visuals will still be a central element of the show, but I also want to try and bring some of the instrumentation to the forefront as well.

This upcoming set at Mezzanine will be my first show back in a while — and one of only a few I’ll be playing this summer as I wrap up the album — so I wanted it to be something special. I’ve been working with some other musicians on the new material so it sort of made sense to try and incorporate them into the live stuff. I spent the past couple weeks deconstructing a lot of the songs and working them into live versions that sort of bridge the gap between electronic and traditional instrumentation and have been rehearsing with the band at Ira Skinner’s studio in Sacramento. Zac Brown (frequent collaborator and guitarist for Dusty Brown) will be handling bass duties while Matt McCord will be on drums. I’ll be on some guitars and synth and Dusty and Jessica Brown will be joining us for a couple songs as well. We’ve got a few more practices but things are sounding really good and I’m excited to bring it all to life on the 9th. Hope to see you there.
