Nicola Odemann has put together another amazing 35mm film set from her recent trip to Iceland. I first found Nicola’s work through her Cargo Collective site about a few years ago, but just now realized she’s also picked-up an Instagram account. Always loved her use of 35mm film, and I love the story about the camera coming from her father. Definitely follow her, as I suspect much more amazing beauty and inspiration from Nicola in the future @wildsommer

CIRCA 1983: Chile

Circa 1983 - Atacama RoadDSC_4404-Edit_o20101111-DSC_4962-4_oDSC_4563-2_o (1)DSC_4497-320101111-DSC_4933-4DSC_2039-Edit-2_oDSC_2104-Edit-2_oDSC_2062-Edit_oDSC_4207-Edit-3_oDSC_4978-Edit-2_7_o (1)DSC_4985-Edit-3-2_o

A few images from my travels through Chile this past December. Featured here are locations in the Atacama Desert, including Valle de la Luna, Salar de Atacama and Mano del Desierto. There are also two images from Santiago, which happen to be the final shots I captured with my D600 before having it taken from me at knifepoint a couple days later in Valparaiso. Fortunately, I had a back-up camera and was able to capture the trip north into the Atacama.

A tiny sphere, floating in space

In honor of this week’s discovery of a moon-sized planet smaller than mercury, here’s a selection of work from 2012 of our own tiny sphere, featuring hills, craters, flats, fields, and broken flying machines. Shot with the Hasselblad 500 C/M on Kodak Portra. See more here.

American Outlier: A Walk Across America

blogpromo

Hey ya’ll!

I wanted to do a little shameless plug here for my new project/adventure I’m attempting. In March 2013, I’ll be heading to the east coast where I will dip my feet in the Atlantic and keep walking westward until my feet soak in the Pacific.

That’s right, I’m walking across America and I’m inviting people to follow my new blog as I journal, photograph and record my journey. And no, I’m not Forest Gump’ing.

I’ll also be doing exclusive posts here at ISO50 when I get the chance. One of my objectives is to interview local American artists and photograph them and their works. So if anyone who reads this blog knows an awesome artist of any discipline that’s along my route please contact me!

Scenes from Death Valley

IMG_3398IMG_3736IMG_3726IMG_3637IMG_3500IMG_3521 IMG_3512IMG_3509IMG_3418IMG_3751IMG_3785

Had a chance to explore in and around Death Valley last week with my new favorite lens, Canon’s 24mm F1.4. Stumbled upon a few ghost towns, countless abandoned mines, including one that a migrant had used as a shelter, and even Charlie Manson’s old getaway truck, still preserved in the one of the driest climates on earth. What’s nice about this particular 24mm prime is how it’s fast as it is wide, which makes it great for shallow depth of field in landscape photos, and a perfect tool for capturing shots indoors, in tight places.

Wallasey to Waitaki

While doing a completely unrelated search for “Dinaric Alps” I came across this wonderful collection of vintage photos from an “overland trip” made by Tony Stead from England to NZ in 1962. Stead’s son has posted the images along with excerpts from his father’s written account of the journey.

In 1962, my father travelled from England to NZ. He wrote a diary (B5, hardcover, blue) and shot his first rolls of colour film.
The slides sat alongside the journals in the attic for the last few decades before being digitised.

The details of the trip are fascinating, the Intro portion is a must read. Love the tone and exposure of these. And that Land Rover makes pretty much any picture amazing.

Checking in From The Road

Somewhere between Toronto and Montreal. Really pretty, wide open spaces up there.

So I’m on the road for the first leg of the US Tycho tour and it’s been pretty intense; haven’t had a chance to post here in a while. Jakub is along tour managing and things have been going well. We’ve seen a lot of really beautiful landscapes along the way; so far we’ve driven from Chicago, up through Toronto and Montreal, and all the way from Buffalo down to Orlando where I’m currently holed up in a Travelodge taking a much needed night off from playing. We play Orlando tomorrow night, then on to Tampa and Miami, and then back north for a string of dates ending in Brooklyn. Beacon is along doing support, definitely check them out, really beautiful stuff.

Jakub took this one somewhere outside of Pontiac, MI

I can’t explain what a moving experience it has been to get out and meet so many people and share the work with them. I spent the last year locked in my basement working on the album so it’s been really refreshing to be out here performing it for people. I want to sincerely thank all of you who made it out so far and to all of you who have supported this project in other ways; it means the world to me and I feel fortunate every day to be able to work as an artist.

Gratuitous tour shot including the band, Jakub, and Brian Wenner who is our stage manager

I’ve been dreaming of having a proper visuals rig for a while now — we had been renting equipment — but this time out we finally have our own setup consisting of a 5K Lumen Christie LX45 projector, and Da-Lite Fast-Fold 16:9 screen, and a brand new custom rigging system (pictured below). It’s a great feeling to know that wherever we play, the show will be consistently presented. Thanks to everyone who helped out in Montreal getting this thing built, and to Darren from Home Depot in Watertown, NY for helping build the mounting plate.

Speaking of visuals, I’ve been getting a lot of work done on the new stuff. I’ve been working with Charles Bergquist on a new visuals set and things have been going great. Charles has been shooting beautiful HD footage and I have been arranging / effecting it using VDMX. It’s still a work in progress but we have been showing some previews here and there during the live show. I’m hoping to get that all wrapped up during our post Europe tour break.

As for upcoming stuff, we have a lot planned for the year: Europe, a full US tour, along with some festivals and no less than seven SXSW showcases. Hope to see you out there!
