Adobe’s Russell Brown demos Photoshop CS4’s new content-aware scaling feature in this Quicktime Screencast. I’ve had a chance to play with this new scaling feature a lot during the beta phase of CS4 and I have to say it’s pretty impressive. It’s not without it’s quirks though; larger edits produce very noticeable artifacts in the filled in regions (i.e. those that were automatically generated to fill gaps) but with some healing and patch brush action you can clean most of that up pretty easily.

I heard about this! It is pretty impressive indeed.. Russell seems pretty stoked on it anyways 🙂
Wow, i would really like to try that out.
Awsome
I’ve been using the content aware scaling tools for awhile now and get mixed results. The results I am getting are much better than simply scaling a portion of an image, but the technology has a ways to go before it’s completely dummy proof. Like you say, Scott – with a little work you can get really impressive results.
Two things interest me about this technology: will it enable people to create new ideas previously inaccessible to them, and will Adobe make it better. Any time you give artists new tools, the opportunity for new ideas and fresh design concepts also occurs. It will be interesting to see how this new tool will inspire artists to push the envelope.
Of course, now that Adobe has the technology, it will also be intriguing to see how they will improve upon it. What new features will be available, how much more intelligent will the software get, or will it even stay around in upcoming versions of Photoshop? I guess we’ll see!
I’ve not tried this tool yet but it seems really interesting.
