Some very exciting news about the new CS suite (dubbed "CS Next"). It is being reported that Photoshop CS Next (CS4) will have GPU acceleration, meaning that it would be able to leverage the extremely powerful processor that, for 2D work like Photoshop, usually sits dormant on that $400 gaming video card you have in your computer. This is really big news and could lead to very big performance gains for large computations like filters and screen rendering. No news on how the lack of a 64-bit flavor of Photoshop for the OS X platform will affect this development. Via TG Daily. There’s also some more info over at TUAW.
CS Next: GPU Acceleration?

But the cs4 beta that leaked had 64bit for psp & afx? I didnt see any noticable settings on gpu tho.
erik-
perhaps the beta didn’t include the gpu feature? or maybe it did but was switched off in the code. not sure, but here’s hoping the final has it on.
You should check out the update to the “CS Next” article on TG Daily… apparently Adobe is back-steppin’
There has been talk about CS4 being made for 64 bit CPUs, but for windows only at first. I’m sure that photo shop would be the first to include a 64 bit version if the CS4 was to ever include a 64 bit version.
Sorry i wasnt quite clear. The cs4 beta that leaked was for windows, and it was said to include 64bit versions of photoshop and aftereffects and possibly illustrator wich i never checked. It did however not manage to utilize more than 3.2 gig ram to either program. Not sure if this was because vista occupied the other 800 on my 4gig setup or if the 64bit was not final. The rest of the cs4 changes looked nice tho. Aftereffects had huge improvements in memory handling and multi proccessor features.
I hope this new software doesn’t blow my wonky MacPro to bits.
