Dieter Rams Interviews

Mid-Century Modernist posted a couple interviews with Dieter Rams. One is by Gestalten and the other by The Design Museum. It’s great to see this pioneer of product design is still getting the recognition he deserves.

By the way, can you believe this guy is still around? He’s the true definition of a living legend. That’s one of the coolest things about graphic design, our heroes don’t overdose on heroin at 27. They seem to live long, healthy lives, maintaining productivity well into later life. Must be all the sitting, or maybe all the designer reading glasses.

Wow — check out the Vitsoe link at the end of the video. A shelving system from there looks like it would be amazing. Too bad there is no SF shop…

  2. Hahah, “our heroes don’t overdose on heroin at 27”, brilliant.

If anyone is in London you have to check out the Dieter Rams show currently on at the design museum, truly inspiring. I was there on opening night and Rams himself was in attendance. As you say, a real design legend.

  4. Scott, you’ve given me Dieter Rams / Brahn fever. I hope you’re happy.

Wow, very impressive designs. I only wish the cost of these amazing items wasn’t so prohibitive. Maybe someone needs to open a store for “Modernists on a Budget” or something along those lines.

This video made me think; I’d love to see a ‘Cribs’ style show but with influential graphic/industrial designers. People with more taste than money rather than the other way round.
(Also, congrats on the Coastal Brake release, Scott. Got the WAV download from Ghostly as soon as it hit the inbox. Sounds fantastic! Can’t wait for the !2″ to arrive).

Might be hard to track down for anybody not in the UK, but do (try to) check out Dieter Rams interviewed by Tom Dyckhoff on BBC’s Culture Show on Dec 3rd, interesting and informative.

That’s a very good point about designers maintaining productivity well into later life, Scott – very inspiring post!

    Harley-
seriously, whenever I see that show the first thing I think is “man, these people have terrible taste”. except for the one about Moby’s house, that place was amazing.

By the way, there is a Vitsoe shop for SF. It’s at vitsoe.com. We plan shelving systems for our customers every day, all around the world. We deliver to SF regularly. Yes, really.
