I’ve been going back and forth if i’d ever buy one these disposable USB drives, I mean I love that you can write on them and how they’re packaged but I can see some mishaps come up with using paper, still a great concept by Art Lebedev.
Disposable USB Flash Drives
03.18.2011
It’s a little hard to get behind disposable technology. I’d take a LaCie key style flash drive over one of these any day.
Good idea! love it.
This design is pretty disgusting. Not because of environmental reasons. And not for packaging design reasons. But because it flies in the face of being smart. What is design? Is making something into garbage smart? Just add “disposable” to something and feature it on a design blog? Seems a little easy. And dumb.

People should think outside the box a little and use them as business cards. Just put a selection of your work (and your CV) on them!
This design is also dumb because of environmental reasons. There is no way in fuck that these would be allowed by the EPA or any self-respecting analogous agency abroad.
I don’t know how they look, but someone are doing paper flash drives in Poland. Will see it probably, working for an ecology company and they ordered many of them.
i could see these being useful like cdr’s/dvdr’s are useful.. these would be faster than the cdr/dvdr deal, and would allow you to hand off 16GB of stuff to someone, which is alot more data.
so, what’s worse? (my files are all aiff’s rather than mp3’s).. so.. i burn 20 albums for a friend on 20 separate cdr’s/a few dvd’s, or i put all the files on one of these and give it to em.
the same goes for passing off visual data, or pro tools sessions that are too large to send via FTP quickly.
this isn’t a “dumb” idea, it’s an idea. i see it more as a post on a functional tool, rather than a “design” post.
This has been around for a bit. I got one of these types of things as an advertisement for a new building development in Sydney. came in the form of a credit card type thing and it swivelled out. I think I kept it and i’ll see if i can dig it up.

That’s just wrong.
@Graham
Are You trying to say that this has been around for a bit?
Yeah, I don’t really understand it.
I don’t think they have changed the functionality of the USB drive just because of a new package? So why couldn’t you use a plastic USB drive?
Don’t worry about trying to convince people. This is much better than burning cheap cds that will only be used once.
It should also be much cheaper than that “Lacie key style flash drive” especially if you plan on loaning it out or giving it away.
A re-usable & disposable usb drive at a cheap cost would sell. Put me down for a dozen. If you can get the cost under a buck, make it 2 dozen.
Oh I see. Sorry for the triple post. It messed up and said that I had already submitted a comment when I couldn’t see it. Hammer that post comment button I said. And hammer I did.
Or maybe I was just emphasising my comment 😛
Agree with @Grey. Next to impossible for me to support anything that doesn’t support sustainability. While I agree with @John that this is better than a cd-r, it seems that a real flash drive trumps all. Well, besides transferring files over a network with command line tools. That is the real winner. No trash.
Seems like a horrible idea.
More cheap, disposable crap.
