I’m posting this partly because there was one parked outside my house on Monday and partly because you can’t have grown up during the 80’s without lusting after these things (but I’m guessing all designers, regardless of age, have at least a passing interest in the aesthetics of this car). Gizmodo reports that an Italian team has converted a DeLorean DMC-12 to run on lithium-ion batteries. Sounds like fun but I think I’d rather just buy a new one.

What a coincidence that you posted this today.
Here’s why – and, I kid you not – I just looked up the DeLorean for the first time yesterday. I read somewhere about it being a product “flop”, and I couldn’t recall having seen it before. (This is understandable. I was barely born in the early 80’s.) Then I found out that, apparently, it was the car featured in Back To The Future and it’s link to the movie helped it gain a pop-culture niche.

I grew up about 6km from the Delorean factory in Belfast. After JD got busted the factory closed, I remenber getting the train everyday and passing the factory yard with hundreds of the car chasis sitting in lines….never rusted of course made of aluminium

Aluminium? No way! Stainless it is on the outside.
Chassis (for this car is called ‘frame’) mild steel.
JD’s ‘getting busted’ wasn’t the reason for the closing of the business.
The main reason was the British government pulling their funds out, leading to receivership.
FWIW: JD was cleared of all charges and died an 80 year old free man in 2008
