Just watched the documentary on Ayrton Senna (great film) and I’m really digging the whole F1 aesthetic. These images are from The Cahier Archive, a father and son team that has covered the Formula One Championship from the 1950s to the present.
It’s interesting to see how the sport has changed over the years but my favorite decade has to be the 80s. Check out the previous post on the Porsche 917 for more vintage racing goodness.
Great finds, these images make the whole Formula 1 scene seem so otherworldly. I love the punch and tone good film photography brings as well.
Great to see F1 getting more appreciation on art/design sites, I’m a big fan of the sport and the Senna film was a fitting tribute to the man himself.
Also, you might like these Formula 1 posters I created, take a look 🙂 http://cargocollective.com/pjtierney#1154977/Formula-1-2011-Poster-Series
The 917 is beautiful, but it wasn’t a F1 car 😉
1980’s Lotus with Ayrton Senna behind the wheel is one of the most elegant things to ever hit a racetrack..

Lovely car 🙂
Yeah the JPL Lotus was a thing of beauty indeed. Check out this video from last year’s Brazilian GP weekend of Fittipaldi’s Lotus 72.

I’ve successfully killed the first hour of my work day going through the Cahier archive– thanks so much for bringing this to light! It’s amazing to take that trip back into motorsport history.
Anyone know when (or even if) Senna is coming to US theaters?
Looks like “Senna” is coming to the US Aug 12.
I didn’t know it at the time but the impact of the colors, sounds and typography had on me as a 6 year old was huge. I didn’t know what half of these Euro-centric sponsors were, but they intrigued me immensely. The unique way that Cahier tells the story of an F1 race weekend has enthralled me since I found out about his imagery in the early 90’s. Thanks!
P.S. Go see ‘Senna’, its in
most major metro areas. It
comes to Indianapolis this
weekend (Aug 26th) ENJOY!
