Help Wanted: Overclocker

I’m looking for someone with detailed knowledge of overclocking Intel systems to help tweak a production system in the studio. It’s running an Intel Core 2 Extreme QX9650 CPU (liquid cooled) on an Asus Maximus Formula Mobo with Patriot 8GB DDR2 PC8500 1066MHz memory (detailed specs here). If you or anyone you know can help overclock this machine please contact talk [@] iso50 [dot] com with the word “overclock” in the subject. I’ve had the machine overclocked in the past, but it was never as stable as I needed and I wasn’t able to get the memory running as fast as I wanted so I’m hoping someone can step up and sort it all out.

    Doesn’t ASUS have pretty neat overclocking stuff that can be accessed through the BIOS? I’ve used it scince like 2002.

    hardware being so cheap now it cant be worth it. cpu can usually be taken off 25% out of the box without even added cooling now. But memory is something else. Its simply not worth not knowing that your system is 100% stable imho

    Memory is a big problem. You are going to make sure that they can handle the overclock you need. I´m using 8Gb with patriot viper ddr2 800mhz and they are working prety stable at 950mhz.
    Other point is your power suply.

    Well, theres a tutorial at youtube about overclock with intel and asus and it was made from one of the best overclockers in the world.

    Its not the same motherboard but I think you´ll find the same options at its bios.

    Welcome to overclocking.

    You’re either going to have to accept a modest increase in performance that is 100% stable, or push the limits and have problems.

    Even if you worked your system up 1mhz at a time, and tortured the machine for an hour each time your only as stable as that day.

    Tomorrow it’s a bit hotter, your CPU runs a degree or 2 hotter and your systems unstable again.

    I played with overclocking for a few years, right up to using peltiers and compressor units creating sub-zero temps and needing anti freeze.

    Everything worked great when it wanted to, but I’d always have to scale it back now and then.

    The hotter your CPU runs the more electrical resistance. You’re forced to up the CPU voltage which in turn generates more heat and requires more cooling. On and on the cycle goes. Your water cooling will be adding speed to your machine as it is by just being more effective than air cooling.

    Now that i can’t be bothered with all that hassle, i find the simplest way to get a boost is increasing the FSB speed a little to give the system a little boost, but not take it so far i need to start increasing the voltage.

    Increase your FSB by a few Mhz and run a torture test using the software Prime95, you can run it while working on the machine. If there’s no errors your systems solid, it can take hours for the heat saturation to build up enough to cause one though so don’t just run it for 10 minutes and think your right.
