Impossible Project Instant Lab

The Impossible Project launched the Impossible Instant Lab via Kickstarter, which is designed to transform any digital image via your iPhone into an instant photo that is exposed using only the light from the display, then processed and developed by chemicals. A photo that no longer needs an electronic device to be seen.

What are everyone’s thoughts on this? Is a photo just a photo, or…?

This seems pretty cool if you really dig the analog side of things. It could be limited by the fact that it only supports the iPhone at the moment but I bet there would be plenty of people who’d support it. I’m glad it’s only a prototype at the moment as well given the fact that the next iPhone will be announced shortly and as rumor has it, it won’t have the same dimensions as the current iPhone which would render this a bit outdated.

Interesting. I’m not even sure what’s considered photography anymore at this point. There’s so many different ways to take a picture these days. Pretty soon there will be an external hard drive that takes pictures. Or your shoes. Maybe your watch. It’s a cool concept in the sense that it’s more of a scanner/printer combo that uses film. But I agree with the person above me, why not just buy a polaroid? Unless you don’t want to carry a bulky Polaroid around and want to print Polaroid’s later…

I’m not sure why, but this makes me sad for some reason. I think it’s always a bit sad when novelty and artifice take over authenticity and intrinsic value.

@Navis I’m not sure why photography is hard to define. No matter what you to a photograph with it is still the capturing of an instant in time. It will still take a certain kind of camera to make a career out of it. I mean, a Polaroid has always been a sort of novelty.

It just seems like a stay-at-home Polaroid printer. It is basically Polaroids new camera, except it can fit in your pocket:

It’s innovative and creative. They are a film company trying to get people to use film and creates prints. Not to mention they are a company, so they need to make money. It’s a great idea for those who want those Polaroid prints, but love taking pictures with there iPhone.

I would rather have that new Polaroid camera though.

Wow, need to check some sentences next time.

*No matter what you use to take a photograph…*

I would love one of these. It would be so great to create mood boards or collages. I think sometimes we get so trapped by digital that we forget where things originated from. I’d love creating art with it. Nice find!

I bought it, and I think it’s great! The icon was pettry slick and modern, too.ONE THING: I got a bit confused with the on/off options on red , blue , green and basic . Why am I able to turn on more than one of them at once, when just one of them can effect a picture at once? When I turn on one of those switches, the other ones should turn them selves off, if you know what I mean? Or am I wrong?Anyways, I really loved the effects that you gave us this time, and it added a real crispy, retro, peaceful look to my iPhone photos. Really slick.
