I’ll be playing a live set as Tycho and doing a workshop as ISO50 next week in Tromsø, Norway as part of Insomnia Festival 2009. I’ve never been to Norway so I’m really excited to check it out. I’m assuming I’ll be needing to dress warm? Norwegians: What should I bring? What should I see while I’m there? Any tips would be appreciated in the comments. Röyksopp and Lindstrøm will also be playing at Insomnia so really looking forward to seeing them live.

Hope to see you up there!
Bring:
* Lots of money, Norway is expensive.
* Very warm clothes, you’ll be in -5 to +3 weather, some snow/rain. Big boots are essential, lots of warm fuzzy socks and scarf/hat/gloves are a must.
* Alcohol, which is very expensive here and will be much appreciated at late night gatherings.
* 220V converter plugs, your MacBook’s adapter works fine, but you need to plug with two round prongs, not English style.
Have fun!
I’m flying up from Oslo to see you, both the workshop and the live set! Looking forward to this so much 🙂
As Leo says, warm clothes, converter(s) and a camera (I’ve heard the nature in the area is quite spectacular). I haven’t been there before myself so I’m not sure what to see either, but I’ll send some of my friends over to your blog and tell them to hand you some advice.
How long are you staying? As Leo said, be sure to bring good clothes. You can check out the weather at http://www.yr.no/place/Norway/Troms/Troms%C3%B8/Troms%C3%B8/ to get a rough idea.
For your standard tourist stuff (although I highly recommend you check them out if you are interested and have time), http://www.destinasjontromso.no/english/attractions_most_popular.html
Can’t believe I’m missing this for a couple of midterms, bah!
It’s not too cold, but i would certainly bring a good warm jacket. the nature in Tromsø is FANTASTIC! Take some pictures. You should come to Oslo soon!
The USD is incredibly weak to NOK so be careful with spending. 0.5 litre of beer costs ca. $10 out, and $4 in a convenience store mon-fri to 20.00 sat. to 18.00 🙂 I’m looking forward to Lindstrøm, Röyksopp and You. Saw Röyksopp at Roskilde festival this summer, it was crazy!
What is the workshop about?
Welcome to our cold country.
As you can see we are very worried that you will not get enough alcohol. Also remember that the temperature here is in Celsius, not Fahrenheit.
I’m very sorry I’m gonna be missing out on seeing you play in Norway, I was hoping I’d make it but unfortunately uni work keeps me from going.
Like others have said, volt converters and a big fat wad of bills. Norway may be the best country in the world to live in, but it’s also insanely expensive. Have fun seeing Røyksopp, and you should indeed bring a camera and try to see some of the great nature Norway has to offer.
Hit up some duty free drinks scott!
What is this workshop about? I would love to see you in NOrway, that is, if I could effer afford to make it to Norway…either way it sounds epic, have a fun time!
PS – try to record the workshop please? I love reading about your workflow/inspirations, Ive probably read them all, I can never learn enough though..
how do you get gigs like this? did you prompt them, did they you? do you have an agent that looks for stuff like this for you? its all amazing! i just would like to know the secrets!
Lutefisk and black metal.
congrats! Royksopp kills live!
It’s pretty chilly in Denmark right now, so it must be even colder way up in Norway! Like Leo pointed out, bring very warm clothes: a nice old school sweater and probably ski underwear hehe.
You should really play a gig in Oslo too!
It’s snowing in Tromsø right now so yeah bring snow clothes.. long johns are a must if you’re outside.
Definitely pick up some duty free booze on the plane cause it’s pretty expensive to drink here.
And probably don’t have to mention this but the girls here are ridiculously hot… without a doubt you’ll have a good time.
Sucks you’re coming all this way and I’m busy next week. Def visit Oslo soon.
Have a safe trip!
Simen –
Hook it up 🙂
lmao @ Vergard.
Scott – if you don’t have the coolest job ever. I don’t know who does. Maybe an astronaut is a close second.
NAVIS –
or dolphin riders, also Tim and Eric
Thanks everyone for the great info. I was in Stockholm once so I have a little bit of experience with the money issue, I remember it being ridiculously expensive to even be approaching drunk. They kept saying it was even worse in norway, oh well, maybe they will give me drink tickets at the show. I have a big jacket, but not boots, need to start looking around.
Vegard-
literally laughed out loud on that one… hands down funniest comment ever on this blog, thanks
sean patrick-
not sure how things like this come about, I don’t seek them out but I love doing them. In music you get a lot of chances to meet the people who support your work, but not so much in design, so these types of events are always special.
Any chance of popping over to Ireland…since yer in the neighbourhood
Hello, Scott!
The temperature is dropping down here in Norway. The snow just arrived!
I recommend you to bring some proper winter clothes.
Looking for it to see your concert and be part of the workshop.
Have a nice trip!
Michel Diniz
Seems like people have covered the basics of coming to Norway (bring booze & warm clothes).
I would love to see your live performance, but this is happening on the wrong side of the country for me :/ I’m glad i discovered your site again though! I see you have som new music i have to check out. I remember buying your “first” album, The Science of Patterns. Red Bridge is still one of my favorites. Too bad i lost the cd when i moved.. New full lenght album coming anytime soon perheps?
Anyways, enjoy Norway! You should come back in the summer for sure.
When will you be coming to Germany? :3
Hello Scott, looking forward to your ISO50 seminar.
You should definitely bring your camera as several others commented. If the weather is good (read: not raining or snowing) I recommend a trip up the mountain with the cable car. (http://www.fjellheisen.no/?lang=en&url=/?side=hovedsiden)
If you’re the outdoorsy type, there’s plenty of places to go hiking. Then you’ll need long johns, boots and winter clothes. But if your staying in or near the town don’t worry too much about that, you’ll manage with sneakers or whatever.
Here’s some photos so you know what to expect: http://www.flickr.com/search/?q=troms%C3%B8&w=all
The Tank-guys will probably hook you up with plenty of Mack beer from the world’s northernmost brewery, as they’ve designed some of their beer cans. 😉
Hope you enjoy your stay in Tromsø 🙂
I was down south (Oslo, Kristiansand, Stavanger, and Bergen) playing some shows at the time but I wish I could have made it up to the festival.
