Irina Werning

Back to the Future is a fascinating project by Irina Werning. She has convinced friends and family to recreate their old photos — in some cases, the resemblance is absolutely uncanny. Of course the location, person, clothes etc are all the exact same, but she’s also done a wonderful job of matching the look and feel of the original photograph. That is way harder than it looks. Matching the lighting must have taken forever!

I want to do this. Off to find some old photos of myself…

Those are spot on. Great attention to detail. I wonder if she got the idea from this site, which I visit every day. http://www.zefrank.com/youngmenowme/blog/

I saw this yesterday and I’m still thinking about how difficult that would be to replicate…but the idea is fantastic!

Aside from Ze Frank, this concept is done all the time by amateurs on reddit. In fact, you could say it’s a pretty well established meme that’s far from original.

  11. ant says:

Contemporary Chinese photographer Hai Bo has been doing this for many years in his “They” series with old Cultural Revolution family portraits.

super crative !!!! she nailed it- although most people say Ze Frank had a similar concept, the attention to detail and similarities in light are hard to accomplish! Nice! Will repost!

If you like this check out Gillian Wearing. She recreates portraits of her family with masks and prosthetics. Some of them are very creepy.

Definitely a genuinely great photo project! The time and attention to detail in the project really resulted in a rad series. Inspiring for sure.

Yes, a redditor internet meme. seen many times, even in an exhbition at Saatchy’s gallery, London, this fall.
But, yes, good details in this one.
