ISO50 Music Exclusive: FREE MP3 EP PART III

Cover Art by Alex Cornell

Cover Art by Alex Cornell

Since the success of the first two exclusive FREE EP’s ( 1st & 2nd ) that we did on ISO50 blog I asked for some musicians for more tracks of covers and edits.

Our very own Tom Croose who has helped with Playlist #4 made a dreamy edit of Beirut’s Venice track, i’ve posted this song before but I never felt like it received the proper love.

I’m sure many have covered Elvis Presley’s Can’t Help Falling In Love but 800beloved’s cover comes to us as one of the more unique and stylized one’s that i’d actually listen to. There is a bit of a 50’s slow swing plus some goth that meets post rock, so if you have your finger on the indie pulse I can only explain it to you this way: it’s like if The xx and the Editors covered Can’t Help Falling In Love, yeah something like that.

One guy to watch in 2010 is Shigeto, he can do what that Los Angeles Flying Lotus crew does but he actually plays the drums live at all of his shows and comes from the same town as Dabrye and Samiyam. His edit of Ravi Shankar is a better representation of his rhythms in his original work, you definitely should check those out if you like fatty synths and dub style kicks.

If you downloaded the last FREE EP here you might of heard the M83 You Appearing edit which might be a favorite of mine still. Well Ryan Cavanagh who is half of producing duo Worst Friends, DJ’s as Slowhands, and produces as Addled comes back with an edit of an IDM classic by Aphex Twin. It has the right amount of the original and hints at taking it to soft Tech House land but is definitely more dreamy than dancey.

thanks much….however the MP3 tags are pretty bad, missing info, titled wrong, etc. anyway…thanks

  2. d says:

the aphex twin edit is gorgeous. the beat slides in and matches perfectly.

  3. ebm says:

    the cover art sucks

  4. Jon says:

    “the cover art sucks”

Couldn’t disagree more. I love it.

  5. Jakub says:

    ebm –

such good feedback, ya nailed it! really stickin’ it that artwork, you tell that artwork who’s boss!

  6. Carl says:

Personally, I think that cover art is gorgeous. I would love that blown up to proper LP size, in fact! Also, this Addled remix of “Rhubarb” is phenomenal.

  7. amanda says:

what’s up with the 160 bitrate on rhubarb, son?

  8. Jake says:

In this day & age for all we know, the word “sucks” might mean “cool”.

“….Addeld’s edit of ‘Rhubarb’ really sucked”
“Audion’s Hecatomb show is going to suck so much…”

Jakub, I got so stoked on Tom Croose’s edit of Venice. Used it for a 3D title sequence I did a while back.

PS. the original of Rhubarb is in my top 3 tracks of all time. Can’t get enough of it.

  9. Anonymous says:

i can’t read the cover. is it relevant? does it mean anything? if not, than it’s pretty silly

  10. Raymond says:

Thanks for the music…in the middle of the first track and so far I’m digging it.

I had to post before listening to all the tracks because the cover art is so cool. Kind of bittersweet though…any chance we could see a larger/hi-res copy of it? Great job Alex.

  11. Amy Stoddard says:

Cover art = amazing. Thank you for making this EP free. How about releasing some desktops of the EP album art.

  12. Barry says:

Sorry Tom Croose, but straight lifting drums from other tracks/edits makes what sounds great initially a bit of a cheat to me…..

check this link if you dont have the edit……

john miles – stranger in the city (pilooski edit)

  13. Barry says:

i guess thats what edits are about and all but the effects on the drums dont even change, personally i couldnt listen to it without the other track running around my head.

  14. Rent says:

I’m digging the album art. very clean.

tags are a bit sloppy, but the music is free. so thanks!

*everyone can see a better quality image of the artwork on alex’s site, here: http://www.alexcornell.com/69918/ISO50-Covers

  15. Rent says:

or better yet, download the album and you get a nice jpg of the art…dur!

  16. April says:

Thanks for the free music. I really am enjoying it.

  17. Jay Williams says:

Great collection of songs and great album artwork too! The only thing that bugs me is the improper MP3 file tagging/metadata. I don’t know about you, but I keep my iTunes Library very organized, so improper info just doesn’t fly.

For those of you who are metadata nuts like myself, I’ve uploaded a FIXED version of the EP, with each file properly named and tagged. You can download the ZIP file here:

    http://www.sendspace.com/file/achn63

P.S. Jakub, feel free to grab the zip file and use it as the official download if you’d like.

  18. tcroose says:

wow, someone recognized a drum sample, i didn’t see that one coming…
i used to mix those 2 tracks together when i dj’d and i would let the drums ride all the way through under the zach condon song. i did it so often that i decided it made sense to make my own version to play. my friends liked it and so did zach condon.
i’m sorry that i am a cheat and i have insulted you barry.
please don’t tell paul simon i used his congas.
oh wait, its a free download, so i guess it doesn’t matter.

  19. cheese coney says:

Barry’s mom noticed that sample when she was at my house last night.

  20. zachary saginaw says:

hi mr tom croose. i enjoyed your take on the tune very much. well done everyone!

  21. Mark says:

The cover art is brilliant ! Thanks for the freebies.

  22. Scott says:

    Oh internet…

Awesome music, awesome cover… divisiveness be damned!

  23. Barry says:

Sorry Tom, you didnt insult me, Ive played your mixes over and over, and played out some of your previous edits, all good, I just am so familiar with that track it just wouldnt sound right in something else to me. As I said, it gets the John Miles track running around in my head. Theres no need to be so defensive to be honest, and if your going to put your work out in the public domain then you should be prepared for some criticism aswell as the non-stop back-slappery (i am aware thats a bit of a made up word) that goes on on music message boards etc (A lot here as it happens, funnilly enough thats not meant to be an insult to this blog either, since when did slight criticism beome an insult?)

And cheese Coney, congrats on taking a well posted and always interesting blog down a notch with your 16 year old quips, I’m sure your mom would be proud.

  24. tcroose says:

thanks zachary. as always, your track is rad as hell…and thank you to alex for making us look so pro with that classy cover art!

  25. Jamie says:

Thanks a million! Love 800beloved’s cover.

  26. dottravis says:

Thanks for yet another great EP. Being a long time Aphex Twin fan, I haven’t found a lot of remixes/edits of his work. This one is an exception. I love it and will be playing it out for sure! thanks again.

    The artwork kills. Love it.

  27. dottravis says:

    > I haven’t found a lot of remixes/edits of his work.

    oops
    I meant I haven’t found a lot of remixes/edits of his work that I *like*…

  28. JohnLinewire says:

    Hey

Really cool theme, where can I get it?

    Thanks

  29. gerwin says:

That Aphex Twin remix is pure bliss.

  30. Bobby Chombo says:

This is a great comp tape. Rhubarb is absolutely my favourite AT song ever, I’ve been thinking about doing a bootleg treatment for a while, but I think I’ll leave it after hearing this mix; phenomenal, really adds something to the original. Great post.
