Kevin Dart / Looks that Kill

The amazing Kevin Dart has a new Yuki 7 book coming out titled “Looks That Kill.” To celebrate its release he has teamed up with animator Stephane Coedel to produce a trailer for the second hypothetical film in the Yuki 7 universe, and the result is even more impressive than their previous collaboration.

Mr. Dart has been influential in my development as a designer, and his ability to create a fully realized world with Yuki 7 is truly inspiring. Enjoy.

    I’m not sure why you can suggest it’s more impressive. While longer and more of a complete story, it doesn’t feel like another great trailer; it feels like a modern, short with fun design. The cinematography no longer feels like it has a real understanding of the material it’s referencing.

    The narrative is too long and complete to be a trailer, so why style it like one? They add a bunch of characters that really contribute nothing but padding out the run time. She no longer seems like a bad-ass spy chick in a traditionally male role, just a stand-out agent in a world with lots of spy chicks. It’s less campy and more exploitative now.

    Many of the stills are nice on their own, but are lost when put into motion.

    I LOVE the original. Go back and watch it and then watch this again. It’s simply not as good. Count me as disappointed. :\

    article published quite interesting & informative so that adds new value to me

  3. Loving this… as an animator, most of it is relatively simple to pull-off, with the exception of the reflection/distortion– it’s the illustrated assets that make it look so sleek. If I had illustrations like those to work with, I could probably do something similar.

    @Grey- I agree that the cinematography is a bit stuck in between the “classic” and “today” styles, still tho, the execution is fresh in my eyes.

    Very inspiring. I have a very extensive futuristic storyline, and this has me thinking of ways to express it in a medium like this as Kevin has.

    @Grey & @Alex – Thanks for your thoughtful comments.

    @Alex – It’s interesting to hear your thoughts as an animator. I’ve never done any animation but it’s something I’ve always wanted to learn. What programs do you use in your workflow?

    @Grey – I prefer the visuals of the second film, but I see what you’re saying. I agree this one moves away from the source material, but I don’t really view it as losing sight of its roots, but more of an evolution of the character. To me it feels like the intro to a television series and another fun piece in the Yuki 7 world.
