After what was perhaps the most arduous musical experience of my life, I’ve finally wrapped the new Tycho single. It’s a rather dense arrangement so getting everything to work together ended up taking 3 mixing sessions in SF and LA. I definitely learned a lot though, first, SSL is the most useful, greatest sounding EQ and compression I’ve ever used. Second, my monitoring situation at home is garbage. Time for some more Auralex and Adam A7s. Anyways, it’s done, and I’m done…for about a week or so then it’s back to work on the album.
I spent the free time I had between mixing sessions last week creating the cover art for the single, luckily that process ended up being a bit less stressful (you can see a small snippet of the artwork above). All the details will be coming shortly, the estimated release date is looking like late January. As always, you can keep an eye out here or subscribe to be notified when more info is available.
really digging that cover art.
scott,
the snippet above could easily stand for itself! =)
interesting to see this kinda of work from you…
congratulations on the new single!

Looks awesome so far. Stellar natural texture and tone work.
amazing can’t wait. Scott is it possible the post some of your visuals you use on your tycho sets?
Awesome, i cant wait.
looks like there’s going to be some lovely artwork too
I think it looks cool, just don’t like the graph paper that you’re using a bit in your pieces lately. I think the negative space would look so much better on its own. Dunno if the graph paper has any meaning or purpose in its context. But that being said, I’m not implying that everything in art has to have meaning or be a metaphor in some way. I realize it may purely just be for aesthetics.
It also reminds me too much of my school days :p Look forward to the single bro, but I’ll probably just wait for the full album to buy it.
Scott,
You must be a perfectionist. Sometimes I wonder how bands like The Cure released an album per year. 🙂
Can’t wait for new material.
Artwork looks great. Can’t wait to see the full monty!
Looking forward to it, Scott!
The ‘blank’ spot on her forehead bothers me a bit. But let me stress that: a bit; cause this piece is really looking fantastic. It feels like your slightly moving towards a new position, which I find always great: keeping the essentials that made it so good, but also seeking new grounds. At least that is the feeling I get from this piece of artwork 🙂
I’m very excited, can’t wait to see the completed stuff. Good luck, man!
Absolutely beautiful! Your work is so inspiring to a young designer (me).
I have just recently discovered your work and have been listening to some of the music you’ve posted. The music reminds me of the bands Flying Lotus or Animal Collective, so check them out if you haven’t already.
is this the new song you played at terrabyte?
That looks great so far. As another aspiring designer and musician, this blog is one of my top inspirations…and one of these days, if Tycho should ever come to NYC, I’ll be there.
looks deadly, however i’m with Daniel Carvalho on the graph paper vibe. i dunno, it kind of anchors it to something i can’t quite put my finger on…it’s such a rich image and the graph paper almost makes it a bit cheapy or something for me. i also find it messes with the depth of the lens flarey things and sort of instantly flattens them. otherwise the image is looking tip top tasty.
Congrats, Scott. Can’t wait to hear it. I can sympathize with being “done”… Its nice to have visual pursuits to cleanse the creative palette.
daniel and glenford-
wait until the full reveal…what you’re looking at is a very small portion of an unfinished image, so that may or may not make the final cut. I will be posting a flash movie with more of the artwork and a snippet of the song in the coming weeks.
chris-
yes, if you were at terrabyte in LA, decibel in Seattle, or connext in tampa, I played the song during each of those sets. although that was a live version and not quite finished at the time.
Sounds great mate.
I’m actually really enjoying the graph paper, at first i didn’t even notice it but it adds a really nice touch
Ah, I’m definitely looking forward to the new release.
stoked!
Scott,
I see they are selling a small version of your Progress print on the Obama site. Was this planned? Any info about the print process for this print? Same as the original?
john-
I didn’t know they were, send a link if you have it.
thanks

when do you plan to release the album?
Didn’t mean to hijack the thread with the Obama info. But please provide any info you can should you have any. I’m assuming for $70 that this print is of the same quality as the original. Also to anyone interested code 25OFF gives you a discount.
I love your work. This is looking great!

I’m really looking forward this. Can’t wait to see and hear your new work, Scott.
Great stuff…. any chance your gonna get round to doing some tutorials on how you put together your artwork?
I cant wait to hear it. Each single you’ve released since the sunshine projector re-release has been incredible. Ive been eagerly awaiting your new album since sunshine was released. I really cant complain because this music is worth waiting for and after the steady drip of singles for the past year and a half, there’s enough to “build-your-own” new Tycho album already. But I do wonder, when will we ever get to hear that new album from Ghostly? It seems last year this time I was looking out for it, to buy and give as Christmas gifts. Well, one good thing about releasing several singles is that its been a joy listening to you grow and evolve as a musician, which might have been harder to appreciate if we had gotten those tracks all at once. Any way you choose to do it, I hope this is just the beginning of a long career making music. Thanks again for your music and art.
Which SSL Console were you mixing on?
Can’t wait for the new single! Ahhh hype!
Looking forward to your next release!
Negative space and warm fuzzy textures are the shit!
(please finish the new album, i’ve milked P.I.P. like a cow)
Dig it Scott. I’m really looking forward to the new single. As for your work as a graphic designer…I continue to be inspired by everything you do…keep up the great work.
I post some of your stuff now and then on Finndustry….check it when you have the chance.
Best.
Derek
My kids really enjoy Adrift and From Home….calms them fantastically
