If you’re looking for a high end compact camera, the newly announced Nikon P7000 may just fit the bill. I’ve found myself leaving the full size SLR behind more and more lately so I’ve been thinking of filling the gap with something a bit more portable without sacrificing much in picture quality.
You can pick one up later this month for around $500. Plenty more info and specs over here.

looks too much like canon g11 (or g10)
I might consider buying this once I have some cash. Thanks for posting!

looks pretty good…if you’re in the market for a really great compact, I’d recommend the Panasonic LX-5…it’s essentially identical to the Leica D-Lux 4 that I have, which packs alot of punch for such a small camera…LX-5 has a Leica lens too, shoots well in low light, really great macro ability, and costs about as much as this new Nikon…
Yep, Nikon’s me-too G10/11. Though, I gotta say (as someone who’s loved his G10 for the last year and a half: http://www.flickr.com/photos/phenotyp/tags/g10/ ), I still don’t take it around with me as often because it’s too big for anything but a jacket pocket or messenger bag. The S90 that i got my girlfriend does all the same stuff (raw, manual control, etc.), and it fits in your back pocket without pulling your pants down. A little less glass, but worth it if you really want to have a good camera with you.
Scott, may I suggest the Lumix LX 3/LX 5 over this Nikon or the G11. That sensor and that lens (A Leica, nonetheless) combination is awesome.
The S90 is a really solid compact camera, so the S95 is undoubtedly an excellent choice.
this panasonic gf1 looks awesome too.

Just received an S90 today. …Sayonara to my cumbersome DSLR.
I like the aesthetics of the Canon G series, but I always wish Nikon did something similar in look and feel. I guess my wishes have been answered?
definitely have to look into this. looks like a great mix of everything i’ve been looking for.
That’s my biggest issue with nice cameras, is never wanting to take them with you unless you’re deliberately going shooting. I’ve been looking for a small compact camera that still packs a punch. Thanks.
Canon G12 just announced though!!!
So has anyone tested the P7000? Trying to figure out which compact in the 400-500$ range is most worth it. It’s a hard field to assess!
