I’ve been in love with some of the songs on the new Odd Nosdam LP that just came out this month on the hard working Anticon label. I haven’t really heard anything like this song Ethereal Slap since Marumari’s Supermogadon which definitely isn’t as heavy hitting. Root Bark by Odd Nosdam is more soundtrack-ish but really is unhateable, perfect for a skateboarding soundtrack which I think is what this LP is suppose to be for.
Fans of Samiyam and Flying Lotus need to check out Charles Trees, he has an upbeat crunchy authentic sound that might be able to find in Daedelus’ but also hits as hard as Dabrye.
I’m always happy to hear and support Max Tundra, he is needed in music because he breaks down pop barriers and weeds out and finds the real music lovers that care for avant pop, the video below is shot in such a simple yet attractive way in my mind, reminds me of some Electric Company promo.

Love the Charles Trees stuff. You posted Memories in a previous blog and that song has quickly become one of my faves. Thanks dude!
In my humble opinion, that Max Tundra track is embarrassingly amateurish.
In particular the drumming.
I’m all for natural beats, that are not grid perfect, but when the drumtrack actually stumbles this much, I’m offended.
It’s obvious that he actually loses the tempo feeling in several places, and tries to pick it up again. It’s very obvious that this guy has never spent much time in front of the kit.
I’m not an advocat for picture perfect playing or supreme technical skills at all, but there must be a limit. And even though imperfections have their charm, and often make up a good song, this is much more than mere imperfections.
I love to come here and discover new music, art, photographers and so on. There’s a certain standard to the work and art discussed and shown here. Except in this case.
What I’m asking is:
Would this guy’s work be shown here, if he was equally skilled in graphic design?
I think there would be a huge outcry, if it was presented in the same manner.
I’d have to agree with StigC on this one, that is just some awful awful drumming… and the song and video aren’t much better. It almost seems like a joke.
@StigC and @Jon the Max Tundra video above is from Pitchfork’s A>D>D series:

I think you should watch the ‘proper’ video to Will Get Fooled Again:

… and also perhaps check out the rest of Max’s stuff before being quite so scathing about his musical abilities.
Listen to Joel 😀 Max Tundra is incredibly talented and absolutely excellent live. Probably the most fun you’ll ever have at a live show.
Well, I must admit I like the original version of the Max Tundra track better.
I took a look at the A-D-D show, and even though I think the idea is pretty cool and commendable, I didn’t find a single band I liked.
That’s just a question of taste. I must admit I admire the bands willing to step up to the A-D-D challenge, because let’s face it, the conditions of the whole project is more likely to make you sound bad than great.
But in the context I can see that Max tundra probably had lots of fun playing all the instruments himself and recording on a 4 track and lots of VHS cams.
It still doesn’t change the fact that he’s an awful drummer, but it shows a guy who is down to earth and enjoys having fun, without worrying too much about how he looks in the end. And that is commendable.
stigc & jon-
Max Tundra is incredible, you should give him another chance and listen to parallax error beheads you (“which song” in particular). I know at first it can sound a bit harsh and raw but I think that’s sort of the whole point with him, if it were all shiny and produced it would just be pop.
and as others pointed out, that video is not the polished original version, but that’s the beauty of it, it’s stripped down to it’s core and that it still stands up is what convinces me he is a genius. also, the guy is hilarious so even if the music were terrible I could sit and watch this sort of thing all day: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qkqcNUfPm2w
Hey Scott.
I’ve now spent a good deal of time on youtube, checking out Max Tundra.
I think there are some great clips there and I enjoy the fun stuff.
But still, the music just isn’t touching me. Specifically I can mention a few reasons, but I guess it all boils down to taste in the end.
I appreciate you guys trying to convince me, but I’m simply not feeling it for a number of reasons which I won’t bore you with now.
But thanks for the heads up!
That Max Tundra video reminds me a lot of the Dosh video for “Call the Kettle Black” it has a similar style with the clips of each sound put together as the sounds are heard.
I really dig that first Odd nosdam track. You should check out Egadz
