Debbie Millman / Design Matters

debbie
Design Matters, the long running design radio show by Debbie Millman, is making the jump to the small screen. SVA is producing a TV version of the show and will be taping the pilot episode this Friday. The first two guests are Milton Glaser and Stefan Sagmeister. To top it all off, the show will be directed by the wonderful Hillman Curtis. I’m not sure where the end result will be available, but I’m sure those details will be revealed in the coming days. I’m hoping for the Thursday 8pm slot on NBC.

If you’re in New York, the taping is open to the public — more information can be found on the Facebook event site. Why don’t I live in New York. Sometimes I want to defollow all of the New York designers on Twitter because all these cool events make me jealous.

I recently met Debbie Millman when she was in town to give a talk at school. Her talk was terrific and I’ll try to do a short write up later this week after I go over my notes. I also participated in her workshop about visual storytelling, which she led having just released her new book. She had each of us write a short story, which she reviewed and then set us on our mission of illustrating the story using all sorts of fun tools. It was fun to write fiction — I’ve become rather used to this “blog style” of writing that I forgot there was a whole other way to go about things. (My story is here if you’re feeling adventurous.) The workshop was great — I love periodically going back to the drawing board, literally, and breaking out the pencils pens and crayons. It was also great to just let loose creatively with no rules, objectives, or criteria. Something I certainly don’t do enough.

Neon Indian
Neon Indian probably gets played once a day in my room in some form of an original, remix and now a live version for Daytrotter. His band sounds great to me, hopefully we get some of these 80s TV field recording samples live when he comes to Brooklyn.

Grizzly Bear + Neon Indian + …I think I hear a Madonna sample in the intro = amazing

Another strong FREE LP from Paul White! The man is on a roll, beening loving these 2 LPs.

Mount Kimbie are promising some young lads, they take unique production to a new level for Dubstep or whatever else this kind of music is. There is a ton to listen to which makes replaying songs that much more enjoyable.

Tycho Live in NYC Dec. 13th

ISO50-LPR-1213
I’ll be joining Casino Versus Japan, A Sunny Day In Glasgow, and Shigeto in New York December 13th for the Wordless Series at Le Poisson Rouge. This will be mine and CVJ’s NYC debuts and I’m really looking forward to it. You can score tickets here and check out all the details on the Facebook event page. Hope to see you out there.

On a side note, I just arrived in Portland for the show at The Crown Room tomorrow night. This and the NYC show (along with an Amsterdam date in February — details on that coming shortly) will be my last musical performances before I lock myself in the studio to complete the next full length Tycho album — which is due at the end of March, to be released later in 2010. I’ll be touring more often after the release so I’ll be trying to hit all the cities I’ve missed over the past couple years.

Black To Comm - Alphabet 1968
Ulrich Schnauss has already become our generations Dream Pop captain, with his beautiful cover of Slowdive for Morr Music to this gem from his A Strangely Isolated Place LP, I hope we get something special in 2010 from him.

Black To Comm is what I thought Manitoba and Mum set out to become in my head as these musicians that would make PBS nostalgia soundtracks but it all worked out in the end.

Is it true that Arovane doesn’t make music and now dirt bike’s? i’d like this fuzzy memory confirmed, his album Tides is still one of the best listens to calm yourself or fall asleep to.

If you opened a window and let a sun come into a Stars Of The Lid song then you’d getting something very similar to what Rameses III is doing.

Insect54 has some great shots of Schweizer Grafiker / Graphistes Suisses, a B&W masterpiece of 1960’s Swiss design.

“Designed by Siegfried Odermatt this book features a spread on every member of the VSG (association of Swiss graphic artists). It features many of the great names in Swiss modernist design: Müller-Broockmann, Fridolin Müller, Nelly Rudin, Max Schmid, Siegfried Odermatt, Hans Neuburg, Richard Paul Lohse. It even lists their addresses.”

I hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving holiday last week (or weekend if you’re abroad)! I just got back from DC tonight after a nice long break and was greeted by this excellent work by Hey Studio. Their entire portfolio is filled with incredible work, but I was especially attracted to this piece for the Observatori del Treball. I love information graphics more than most things in the world and these illustrative forms reminded me of some really beautiful graphs I’ve seen in the past. Of course they aren’t providing any “info” here, but they look so good I don’t mind at all.

Check out the rest of their portfolio here. (The Playboy poster, third one down, made me smile…). Via Changethethought.

New Tycho Single On Pitchfork

pitchfork-cb
Pitchfork posted the new Tycho single today. As far as I know this is the first time the full length track has been available anywhere. You can have a listen here.

Radian + Zelienople + JJ + Growing

Radian
If you’re ever looking for very precise textured music with a post rock touch then Radian will blow your mind live, I never saw a drummer that was such a detail sensitive machine in my life. They have their moments in songs where they don’t do much but it feels like 2 tons are lifted off your shoulders, there minimalism is only more and more appreciated after just a few listens.

One of my favorite new songs that Sam shared with me was this song by Zelienople, total Slowdive feel and done well. Each vocal feels like its moving aside dense fog, its crazy to say but 5 minutes wasn’t enough.

With a Pitchfork stamp of approval under their belt JJ was worth checking out, it starts out happy like a some kind of odd Lemon Jelly B side but the under belly reminds me of what maybe is in Four Tet’s future? definitely not the best song to represent the album but a nice interlude instrumental.

Radiohead’s Spinning Plates doesn’t have to be the only song that you’ve heard that has the majority of the song backwards, you can now add Growing to that list. This opening band for F*ck Buttons marries chuggy noise and Miranda July dream sequences really well, not a song to jump around on, definitely a grower.
