RCA Spectra 70

Beautiful shot of the RCA Spectra 70 computer (1965). They need to start making ATX cases that look like this and the DEC PDP-8; people would start putting their computers in the middle of the room.
These are the same guys who later brought you this (unrelated but awesome commercials — including Superman Peanut Butter — follow):

Also, apparently “pause” was once known as “stop action” and qualified as a “special effect”. Wait’ll Quigley sees this!

Wow loving the sound effects from Dark Tower. I miss the old internal pc sound effects. How great would it be if the IPad made those types of sounds?

Lets just say I wasn’t looking at their hair when they were singing “bounce”

  3. Great post, thank you

Man, the casing is devine. Surely it’s only a matter of time before Apple put out a line of computers with retro casing. “At last a peanut butter you can look up to”, advertising really is design’s ugly cousin.

  8. I grew up in Chicago and remember all of these commercials, especially the last one, but the VCR commercial was the best…high tech stuff. I also remember the Spectrum service, but we didn’t have it. I also vaguely remember something called “On TV” which I believe was an HBO-type movie channel from circa ’82ish. I remember watching the carton movie Heavy Metal on it at my friends house when I was seven or eight tops. Pretty great stuff…

Special Effects like Stop Action! Wow. All I have is lame old pause.
