Came across the blog of Sarah France today, really liking how she keeps it old school with the hand drawn concepts. Long live Pen & Ink! She also has some cool photos along with a really clean page layout.

I really wish I spent more time with the pencil, I have become pretty lazy over the years. It’s come to the point where writing a full page of text makes my hand hurt so bad that I have to stop. Pretty sad, but I guess with computers there’s less and less need for handwriting.

The feeling of writing and having that tangible copy of something is always nice. Like a journal for example, in contrast to a blog… its different looking at your handwriting and aged paper. But on a blog, you can include pictures and links, and citation. Or even color and the layout involves changes the tone and perception of it… (possibly?). At my high school were even given laptops to type notes and power points, you have to wonder if one day we’ll ever write at all.

The letters hand drawn give a bold/old feel.

Thank you Scott, for adding my work to your blog and for such kind words.

Today I started a work placement at Cumbria Newspapers, and was astounded to see that all the creatives, except for their lunch, never moved away from their computer screens. For initial ideas and developments I only know of layout paper, and kitchen grease proof paper. Although I managed to adapt to the method and produced a mini advert, I did find it difficult, not creating a range of concepts and layouts before importing into InDesign. But I understand greatly their weekly deadlines for the printing press.

I can’t draw much either these days. I fended an attacker of someone and have permanent hand damage now.

I’m in a gradute program for Motion Graphics and Animation at NYU. One of the core classes everyone has to take is an Art, Design and technology class. It’s not until the final project that we are allowed to touch the computer to do it on. Up until that point we use paper, pen, pencil, ink and paint. It was interesting to see that alot of my fellow students had never painted before let alone touch a paint brush. Coming from a traditional photography and art background I wasn’t really all that fazed by the pencil and paper approach before moving onto the computer to finalize your ideas.
