Sebastião Salgado

Perhaps I’m a little late on the Sebastião Salgado bandwagon but I’m really glad I jumped on. Sebastião Salgado is a veteran documentary / photojournalism photographer from Brazil. I believe most of the shots above were shot with a Leica M7 with mostly Kodak’s T-Max 400 film. I’ve also read that Mr. Salgado has switched to digital format in recent years. Either way, his photographs floored me. I was at Samy’s Camera here in Los Angeles and they had his book Genesis on display. I could have sat and viewed that book for days. Each image had me staring at it for a good length of time. Salgado’s work is the kind of work that makes me want to quit photography entirely because it’s just too good.

I could go on and on about his work but go ahead and do your own research on Sebastião Salgado.

He changed to digital format just in this work, Genesis, because he had to travel a lot and the x-ray from the airport ruined the film.

I read that Cannon did a special camera for him, to help with the change to digital format.

  7. These are gorgeous. Thanks for sharing.

These photographs some of the best I’ve ever seen! I have the same reaction as you Navis. Seeing this good of photography makes me want to just put the camera away. But we both know we’ll never do that for more than a few moments!

The title of this post have an error. It’s “Sebastião” not “Sebastio” 🙂

Long time fan of your music, not sure how I missed the ISO50 connection….

SS is one of my heroes. If you can still manage to find a copy, pick up Between The Eyes… by David Levi Strauss and peek at chapter three. Salgado is a fascinating human being doing enormously important (thought under-respected) work for the betterment of the economic downtrodden.
