Skalpel: Sculpture

Skalpel: Sculpture
Skalpel are a jazz duo from Poland on Ninja Tunes, they sample 50s-70s Polish Jazz and piece together tracks. I always liked the video for this song and the raw lo-fi recording did it for me everytime. It reminds me of The Avalanches alil but not as uptempo, i’ll post something from them soon.

One of the best polish chilled jazz bands ever! I really like Pink Freud as well you may want to check it out.

This clip is very clever indeed. Plus I love the covers of all skalpel’s albums. Nice typography!

  2. The studio that worked on their covers is Panda Yoghurt (www.pandayoghurt.co.uk).

Skalpel is one of my favourite band ever. It’s a pity they seem to have disbanded. No news since their last album – Konfusion – in 2005…

I do like it a lot, but it’s definitely background music to me. It’s the same several bars repeated infinitely with some drums that kick in at random.

It reminds me of Koop, but I think they do a better job at not being so repetitive.

I’ve often felt that Skalpel sometimes did the Cinematic Orchestra thing better than the Cinematic Orchestra! Quantic did a really nice remix of one of their tunes.

  5. I was on a NinjaTune stint in 05-06, especiallly over Jaga Jazzist’s A Livingroom Hush, another great jazzy release. I’m surprised how little I’ve heard from NinjaTune since then, although it could be due to my lack of paying attention to them once I started to get into more IDM-ish ambient and downtempo sounds.

I never checked out these guys in depth, might have given them a brief listen while myspace browsing, but I am definately going delve back into NinjaTune’s lineup in search of new aural pleasures…thanks for posting this up!
