Testing the Waters

In the past we’ve talked about shooting underwater photos and wanting to experiment with it. These photos are from photographer Steven Taylor with musician Devan DuBois as the pictured subject. These images are a testament to the cool things that can result from experimenting with underwater photography.

I still would love to rent a housing for my Canon 1dmkII or even a cheap film camera and go for a dive into the ocean or a lake.

Can anyone recommend a decent waterproof film camera?

I think scott mentioned the canon d10 powershot is really great a while back. the footage he got filming surfers for that new song he put on his new live set looked great.

@Brendan Thanks for reminding me about the Canon d10. I’m looking for a film camera not digital. I really would like to shoot both but film sounds more appealing to my first attempts underwater right now—the results could be really interesting.

I have seen some awesome underwater photos shot with a Nikonos V (Nikon) camera and some black and white film. You can see examples of what I am talking about at http://www.oceanicdreams.com

I have to agree, my friends and I joint own a Nikonos V and it’s not only a great camera but a beautiful object! The original model was designed by Jacques Cousteau and it was improved until the V, which takes wonderful pictures!

  6. Taylor says:

    Super rad idea. Love it!

  7. Frank. I actually took these on a NIkonos V. Really great camera.

  8. Frank says:

These came out great Steve. Didn’t realize you shot them on Nikonos! What type of film did you use?

  9. Brett says:

Nikonos V is the funnest underwater camera I’ve ever used. Kudos Steven for these rad photos

  10. Frank I shot it on fuji 400.

    Thanks Brett.

The GoPro with modified lensing is cheap option. Not for stills, but high res video. But only with the mod. Mad photographs. I take it it’s the bubbles that give it the snow-like effect?
