Over the past few weeks I’ve been going through the process of putting together a live band for the Tycho show coming up on July 9th here in San Francisco. Those of you who’ve been to my past shows will know that I usually play solo and the focus is on the visuals and some light synth work. But this recent break from playing live (been working on the new album) has given me a chance to re-evaluate what I want the performances to be about and it’s also afforded me some time to put into developing the whole thing a little more. The visuals will still be a central element of the show, but I also want to try and bring some of the instrumentation to the forefront as well.
This upcoming set at Mezzanine will be my first show back in a while — and one of only a few I’ll be playing this summer as I wrap up the album — so I wanted it to be something special. I’ve been working with some other musicians on the new material so it sort of made sense to try and incorporate them into the live stuff. I spent the past couple weeks deconstructing a lot of the songs and working them into live versions that sort of bridge the gap between electronic and traditional instrumentation and have been rehearsing with the band at Ira Skinner’s studio in Sacramento. Zac Brown (frequent collaborator and guitarist for Dusty Brown) will be handling bass duties while Matt McCord will be on drums. I’ll be on some guitars and synth and Dusty and Jessica Brown will be joining us for a couple songs as well. We’ve got a few more practices but things are sounding really good and I’m excited to bring it all to life on the 9th. Hope to see you there.

Oh man, I’m so curious to what this would sound like.
Wow! I can’t remember if you told me that you were going to experiment with a live band (Dusty Brown + Drummer) but I’m so excited about this. I have a whole posse of people going to see the show from Sac. They’re all really amped to go!
I seriously hope someone brings a nice video camera for all of us east coasters.
Don’t ask me why, but I thought you’d like to see this.

Wow! This will be amazing. Yet another reason why I’d love to be in San Francisco. As Brendan said, I to hope someone brings a nice video camera.
this show is going to be so goddamn awesome! cant wait…
I will try to get someone to tape the show, maybe alex can bring his 5D.
scott.
sounds like an excellent idea to record the show – especially for those of us on the other side of the atlantic!
looking forward to hear your new sounds. i enjoy your soundscapes.
cheers,
morgan
thanks for the update, looking forward to the show
This sounds fantastic, Scott!
BTW, I’d be more than happy to come and shoot the show (or at least parts of it) with my T2i. I shot a Christopher Willits performance a few weeks back… you can check it out here: http://vimeo.com/11790290
Hit me up if you’re interested.
Dear Scott. I think I love you. I wish I lived near there so I could see this set.
The 5D will be there in full force
My god. Anyone from Seattle willing to fly down??
I originally thought this epic showdown was occuring in late august for some reason. My bud and I were discussing a road trip to San francisco to do this + the FITC.
If you had a show in august I would be so down to make it out there. Anyway good luck tying up the new record.
brendan-
sorry, afaik nothing is planned here for Aug. I think I’ll be doing some sort of Tycho set for the FITC show but it’s probably not going to involve a band as it’s more of a DJ vibe for their events. Also, it might be closed to the public, not sure about all that though.
are you going to be doing this for the LA show as well?
The idea of a band appeals to me more than you doing the usual DJ kind of thing. I want to go, but I’m 13 and I don’t think my dad would approve of me being out at 10 in SF, haha. Maybe I’ll see a show in Sacramento sometime?
chris-
no, the LA show is going to be a much smaller scale deal and the tech is a little too much for that venue this time. But when I come through for the tour it will definitely be the band.
@Nicole, I’m considering it depending on airline prices.
Since I just moved to the Bay Area a few months ago, this is now a great opportunity to hear you perform live. Having lived in St.Louis most of my life I had always felt these shows were out of my reach.
It was equally enjoyable to find out the crew from DustyBrown will be joining you. Really looking forward to this.
@Shelby- $300 is the best I’m finding. I can’t decide if its worth it (even though it totally is…) Any luck?
Scott, is there any way I can buy my way into the FITC and also to even a solo Dj-esque performance this august? I would be so down to travel out there to catch that! This is dead-serious right now
I would EASILY pay $200+ for an album of your electronic music translated into live music. I think the term “epic” is going to fall far short of describing this experience. Can’t wait.
make videos – and for the love of whatever divine being, someone please get one of their taper friends to record a soundboard of this and throw it up on archive.org!
I would like to know if you are doing a tour in the future. If you are, it would be amazing if you could make your way through arizona.
It’s unfortunate you won’t be doing this for the LA show. I may have to drive up specifically for the SF show. I won’t be there to videotape it. But definitely to photograph it.
Just a quick question, since me and my friends were trying to figure out what it was in the water bottle by Zac’s foot in the picture where he’s holding the bass. Is that dip in the bottle?
heres a video of the practice session. http://vimeo.com/13165857
PLEASE COME PERFORM NEAR TENNESSEE!!! This sounds like an awesome set up man, and I’m so psyched to experience it someday! I’ve seen and heard video of your live performances, and I’m extremely impressed and inspired, as is the case from all of your visual and musical creations!! Seriously, try your best to make it out here! freakin MOOGFEST in Asheville, NC man! TYCHO should be ON THAT LIST! Dam Funk, Caribou, all these crazy awesome guys are rising in the ranks, as is Tycho! Getcha self ova here! You’ve got a ton of fans. Work on it dude, and best of luck! Keep up the buffsexiness!
