Thomas Scholes

Thomas Scholes is a digital artist out of Seattle who uses Photoshop to create painterly landscapes sort of in the vein of Roger Dean and more recently, Dan McPharlin. I love his color use and the texture; it’s really incredible that this is all being done within software.

Thomas also does a lot of process videos showing how he works with various imagery and textures to get these effects. I particularly enjoyed this one which shows him modeling a landscape from a photo of a woman (see video below). I love the idea of incorporating unrelated imagery into a composition as texture or distressing — or, in this case, as a framework.

Yes, yes it IS Vitalic. I’m actually so very surprise that Vitalic has not come up on this blog more often. One of my favorite electronic artists at the moment.

Oh sorry, and yeah the artwork is pretty incredible too. 😉

scott ! can you post some video about your work process ?

  8. I am flattered beyond words.
Scott, your music has joined me throughout the creation of much of my work and has helped create and enhance the mood I search for.

Furthermore in my experiments in painting live broadcast over the internet; http://www.livestream.com/tomscholes , The playlists and multitudes of well curated music gathered here on this blog by yourself and Jakub have not only accompanied me throughout the painting process but have also become for some more entertaining than than the images.

If it were in question, I also very much enjoy your visual art and envy your ability to amplify your visuals with aural art and vice versa. Something to indeed aspire to.

Again, Thank you. Do I need to start a petition to get Tycho to play in Seattle? Bring Dusty Brown and Mux Mool please 🙂

    Thomas-
nice, glad you have used the music to work to, I definitely see parallels between our work (the reason it caught my eye in the first place).

I will try to get back to seattle soon, was there last year with dusty for Decibel.. once the album comes out I will be up there for sure.

I don’t comment often but I visit almost daily to check for updates. I love the content here and find it very inspirational and educational. These images are simply awesome and I really enjoyed the time lapse video! Thanks for sharing such great stuff.
I hope it’s ok to plug my 365 design project here. I am creating some very basic concepts daily for one year just to keep myself creating and hopefully improve my abilities over time. Hopefully by the time the year is up I will be a better designer. I also want to get feedback and involvement from the creative community. I welcome feedback and advice.

I love these. So beautiful. They remind me of pastels or impressionist oils. I thought I was good at Photoshop, but I think I have much to learn. 😉
