I checked in on Tim Navis recently after way too long away and as usual, I was not disappointed. He’s posted a lot of new work much of which I see as a distinct evolution from his already stellar earlier output. A lot of it is taking on a very illustrated quality which I really enjoy. Also loving the new B&W stuff; that tennis court shot is incredible. I’m pretty sure he’s using a 5D MK2 these days, not quite certain though.
On a side note, I’ve been trying to get Tim to do a process post here. Maybe a little urging will do the trick.

The tennis court photo was the point I stopped scrolling down..it looks very eerie and kinda spooky, the sky being all lit up as something going on behind those mountains. I’ll definitely keep an eye on his work, great stuff.

s-curve layer for good contrast and then levels layer, cut off a little blacks and whites to give it a film quality.

metadata from flickr shows him using a canon 30D for his newest stuff, including photos above. You can get a 30D for about 300 bucks these days… not that the gazillion-dollar mark 2 isn’t awesome, it is, it’s just that the increadable photos above were taken by a camera 1/10th the cost…
I have been on the fence about getting a digital camera for about a month now. I used to shoot film like it was candy and loved the results my ignorance created.
Images like these by Tim urge me to believe in digital. I’ll start seriously looking into cameras in the new year when finances are much nicer.
A process post would probably encourage me all the more to get into it. The clean and smooth photos are like that which my mind wishes to make.
God damn this guy is so good.

@ KEVIN A: Excellent point (this coming from a 5D/II owner), and the bigger query should be what glass does he have on the front of that 30D? Whatever he’s seeing his world through, he sure as hell knows how to achieve a grand vision. That first shot above of the woman has me hooked.

And yup, it’s a 30D. If it’s a landscape shot, I’m using a mid level 17-85 mm Canon zoom and if it’s a person I’m using Canon’s mid level 50mm lens. I always use a prime for people. Always. While the 30D works, it is one hell of a noisy camera. Even at ISO 400, it gets pretty grainy. Which is great for certain things but sometimes I just want a damn clear picture! But I think it’s 50/50 camera and how I process.
I’ll be shedding some light into my processes and more in the new year here at ISO 50. I have a lot of new projects coming up so I’ll document those for ya’ll.

Thanks Tim for the shooting techniques. I only use point-n-shoot cameras but want to dive into a Nikon D7000. Can always add the grain later, right? he he. Post process would be great, plus any recommendations for a semi-techie moving into DSLR (tutorial links or books we should look at). Thanks! Keep up the great work!
A picture that good (tennis court) couldn’t be taken with the Canon 5D MKII. It must have been made on a filmcamera!
