These are from a great vintage science and tech ads set on flickr. There are over 1400 examples in the set so it will keep you busy for a while if you’re looking for some weekend design inspiration.

The last one is so cool. Strange how it seemed like the 50s and 60s had a goal of foward progress. That single picture depicts it all. Where is our foward progress and economic expansion?

About this one: just had a sneak peak for now, but I’m stunned by the vision, the purpose of all of this. As Brett says in comment #1, the graphic production – all was pointed to show a better tomorrow.

These really remind of some of the work Saul Bass did. Recently started getting into his design style. Just noticed the Psycho Advertising article on the side bar. I’ll have to take a look at that next. Great stuff Tycho.
there’s something so odd about defense contractors marketing themselves with such friendly, colorful, handmade styles. nowadays military related advertising is all Halo’d out.
Graphic designs and art from older eras was so much better. I love photo shop and i use it but simpler, had made designs all ways appeal to me much more.

I don’t know about other cities- but Portland has this amazing collection at the Downtown library called the “Picture Files”. Essentially- these are pages of subject matter cut directly out of magazines going back to I think around the 30’s. WOW. Talk about some amazing imagery.
When I started designing for the new local organic brewery Hopworks- I went down to the trust librarian and asked her for 70’s beer advertisements. She scrawled something down on a little piece of paper and sent me to the back where I handed it off to someone who scurried away. 10 minutes later- the librarian hands me a STACK of Manilla folders. Each one with categories of SINGLE SHEET advertisements cut out of actual magazines; ALL about the individual subject matter. I sorted through them and was able to check out 50 of them in my own Manilla envelope.
You might check your local library to see if they have a similar resource- I know that some universities do– but they are going extinct. If you’d like a trip to the PDX version and geek out– I’ll totally take you, just give me a heads up next time you’re gonna be in town.
